    Stanley #45 Combination Plane

If you've got one of these planes and are missing some of the straight blades, check out the blades for the Veritas Small Plow Plane 05P51.01.
I recently bought the 1/4" blade. It's about 7mm shorter than the rest of my #45 blades but works fine so I'm going to order two more widths to fill out my set.
(I guess because it's shorter I'll have to replace it in 30 years instead of 50 )

Lee Valley also has reprinted the instruction bookets for the 45, 50 & 55 combination planes into one booklet: 49L80.52

Does anyone know of any other instruction books or DVDs for the #45?
I'm getting a little better with it but still having a lot of difficulty getting good results.
Or does anyone have any tips/suggestions?

For me, it's simple. Keep the sole flat and the blade sharp. Then, most everything else becomes pretty much academic. There is nothing quite like the "song" of a fine plane, is there? Sure, you have to keep bolts tight and that sort of thing, but I've found that they tend to loosen up more from the vibration of being used with a dull blade, or from temperature extremes.

I have a Type 8 but it is mainly for the collectable value. The only book I have on them is "The Stanley 'Forty-Five' Combination Plane" by David Heckel. I had to thumb through it to be sure, but it is strictly about collecting and typing the 45's. Nothing on the actual use.
