    Kids and Carving

A colleague is looking for a woodcarving kit for her 6 year old. Any advice on where to look, what to get, and what to watch out for? How about protective gloves?

At least initially, I think he's going to be carving soap.

For protective gloves, which was first on my mind too, maybe fish filleting knives, probably cheaper but imho the same as a dedicated carvers glove - if anyone knows otherwise please inform us. Maybe some food dye to color the soap to make it easier to see the difference between carved and uncarved sections. Some simple to follow templates - maybe basic shapes to start, etc. A knife that will correctly fit the childs hand. That of course could be made pretty easily and shaped accordingly. That will give you control over the fit and the sharpness of the blade.
I think in straight lines, but dream in curves

IMO, a six year old is a little too young to be playing with knives. At that age their dexterity isn't all that great. But, here is a good protective glove...just in case.
