    Kickback post from another forum

Generally wouldn't link to another woodworking forum, but thought I'd make an exception.

If you don't keep positive control over the piece between the blade and the fence, the only thing keeping it from a likely kick-back when the cut is completed is the kickback pawls.

Granted the best method of prevention is control of the trapped piece, but on a cut like this, the use of a short fence (or a stop block on the stock fence) is probably the way I'd make it. Just my thoughts....

Yeah, I don't think I would have made that cut in that manner. put the saw on wheels so that you can use your rip capacity. Well, even then it might be dodgy to cut across the 24" of a 24x48 in that manner.

Certainly using a push stick to push the 1" through probably would have solved his issue, as he seems to have finished the cut ok, then left the 1" piece sitting between the fence and blade, I would never do that regardless of kickback pawls.

That cutting method is a 110% guarantee of a kickback on the piece between the fence and the blade. I gotta say "what was he/she thinking?" One way to control this type of kickback is with those yellow roller thingies that attach to the top of the fence and put downward pressure on the piece between the fence and the blade. However I don't think they work on such a narrow piece. I use them all the time, never a kickback. I have even tested them by releasing the piece between the fence and blade after its cut and they just hold the wood there. Try at your own risk. Great product for safety.

The op on smc is trying to justify buying a new tool when it is do to operator error. Please, that person needs to take a safety training course, or else use better judgment.
