    Stapler for carpeting?

I'd like to install new carpeting on some stairs to the basement this weekend. What would you recommend for a pneumatic stapler? And what about staple length?

I believe Menard's has a Porter-Cable air-powered staple gun for $29.99 this weekend. I've used mine for stapling carpet and it works great. Use 1/2" staples if you ever want to remove the carpet. DAMHIKT!

The electri staplers that the carpet pros use are 'muy' spendy.
You might think I haven't contributed much to the world, but a large number
of the warning labels on tools can be traced back to things I've done...

When I put carpet runner on my steps last summer, I used an electric Stanley, cost around $30 a couple years ago.

I also applied carpet tape to help prevent any slipping of the carpet on the steps and to keep it tight on the face of the steps. Everything has held well so far.

      Staples were 5/8",

Thanks guys. I picked up some 1/2" staples and a stapler today (although I got a Bostitch at Home Depot because the Menards I went to didn't have any of the PC's in stock). My wife and I cut the carpeting down into 36" wide strips this afternoon. I'm going to try stapling it down tomorrow. I think I'll try the carpet tape, too. That is a great idea!

We don't really need anything fancy. The carpeting going down those steps now is a runner down the middle. The dog has some problems sometimes because he gets over on the wood part, and his paws slip. The current runner was there when we got the house, and is just stapled. It has held-up fine.

So I figured $43 for some carpeting (w/ coupon at Hobo) and I'd give it a shot. I told my wife, "if it doesn't work, we can have a pro come do it." She said, "if it doesn't work, you'll get another $43 piece of carpeting and make it work, I'm not paying $400 to $500 for carpeting that the dog is gonna yak on."

Oh yeah, his food and water bowls are at the bottom of the steps and when he gets himself too excited he sometimes yaks his breakfast or dinner on the steps. What am I gonna do? I love the lug so much I wouldn't mind if he yakked on a $500 job, either.
