Hi, my name is Jim, and I'm becoming a hand tool addict..
Last week, I started a four part course on hand tool joinery at the local woodcraft store. Last week we learned half lap (mostly to learn the tools) and mortise and tenon. Now we move on to dovetails. I'm really enjoying the peace of working with the hand tools, and can see why people go crazy about this stuff. Fortunately I also received a bonus, so I'll be getting a few hand tools at one of the classes. Looks like a set of chisels, a dovetail saw (probably the Lie-Nielsen straight handled dovetail saw), a small bench (I don't have anything with a vise right now), and some marking tools will be in order. I'm already thinking of some small projects to try, probably some small boxes and the like. I think that the hand scraper class will be the next one. And some used hand planes (is a Stanley 5 1/4 for $35 a decent deal? A Sargent jack plane (same size as a Stanley #5 I think) for $24? Look to be decent condition, but need some work). Plus Woodcraft Magazine had an article on making a shoulder plane. This can't all be good, can it?
