So what's a good mobile base for a Unisaw?

If you haven't been following the other thread of mine, allow me to update you - I managed a jaw-dropping deal on a Unisaw today.

It's the 36-955 : a 3HP cabinet saw weighing around 450 pounds. The seller will help me deliver it next week and even help unload to my garage. But I need to have a mobile base under it - cannot afford a permanent spot for it.

So what is the most optimal mobile base for it? By that, I mean as cheap as possible, but strong enough for a Unisaw?

I understand the Delta 50-289 Mobile Machine Base

is built just for this, but it's also $176! Isn't there anything cheaper?

And yes, I trying to see if I could get this in before the saw is delivered, so I don't have to worry about setting it on the base later on.

Do local stores sell any of these bases, like HD/Lowes, etc?

Check out the Griz bases. This small one holds 700lbs for around $70. I think the heavier duty one goes up to 1200lbs. Adding the extension for the table will probably double the cost.

Hi Radhak!! Here's a possible option for you http://cgi.ebay.com/JET-Mobile-Base-...742.m153.l1262
I have purchased from this seller 2 or 3 times, great people to deal with. No guarantee that this will fit a Unisaw, but it might. Take a look, it is definitely cheaper.

If you want to make one, here's a thread I found at SMC. You might get some ideas from it.

Thats a nice looking base. Its tough to tell from the pics what its made of but it looks like 8-10 bd/ft of 8/4 red oak. The wood plus the HD castors and hardware are going to put you in the $75-$100 range at a wild guess.

If you go with the Grizzly base (and it is a good one) don't get the extension for the extension table. I did and it would have been easier and cheaper no more often than I move the saw just to raise the feet up enough to clear the floor. It's not really needed to support the extension during a move. Thanks guys! All good options.

Simply because I wanted it real fast, and since I have a woodcraft that I can drive to, this seems okay for $63 :

              Anybody tried it?

Says to "simply cut a piece of 3/4" plywood (not included) to size and bolt it to the four corners of the base hardware".

Would a ply piece really be strong enough to hold 500 pounds?

Another comparable is from Rockler, now at $40 :

The low price is tempting, but may not reach me soon enough.

Hmmm - maybe I should stop hurrying this up too much...

I just sold a Uni-saw to get my Steel City 5 HP. If.. if you are running a 50" fence... if.. if.. you move the saw around alot due to lack of space..

I would bite the bullet and get the Uni-saw base with extension. It's custom made for the saw.. it is extremely sturdy.. it moves the saw easily from spot to spot with the raise-drop lever and it's the best base for that saw I found and I shopped em for 2 weeks with not many not looked at or considered.

If the saw is pretty much permanent as mine.. the options you are looking at should be fine. But if the conditions exist I first mentioned I would definitely do what it took to get that Delta mobile base as it is time tested to "get er done" so to speak.

                Good luck...
