Jet Air Filter, AFS1000B Prefilter

I have a Jet AFS1000B air filter hanging from the ceiling of my shop. It's been up there for almost two years, but only been used about 6 times. In fact, the shop was not used at all for over a year, while I was gone on contract.

I looked at the "Electrostatic Filter" that is the pre-filter element, and it is totally covered in dust, rather thick dust. Does anyone know any way to clean this filter? I priced the replacements, and they are REALLY PROUD ($$$) of them. I thought about replacing it with a regular furnace filter, even the most expensive furnace filters are less than half the cost of the Jet element, but Jet made it 11 1/2" X 23 1/2" and I don't think the opening will take a 12 X 24 filter element.

I guess I could buy a "cheapie" to try for fit, or I could just use the handyman's friend, duct tape and mount a new element on the outside of the lip of the filter body. The inner "sock" filters can be cleaned, I believe.

I have a Jet AFS1000B and have changed the filter many times over the past year. Don't know about you but love it to death. I have only cleaned the inner once and then didn't really need to. I use a HEPA that I get from Home Depot or Lowes. Mine will take a 12X24X1. It is a tight fit but maybe that is why the inner never gets dirty. Don't know but I do know you can use a "cheepy" filter, I do.

Another that uses filters from Lowes. Something else that helps is to attach another filter to the outside of the unit. A simple little "L" bracket works but Rockler has some plastic brackets that are made for the purpose.

Not sure if they are still available or not but the outer electrostatic filter that I have for mine is washable. I've had it for years and all I ever do when it gets dirty is rinse it out, let it dry for 24 hours and reinstall it. The Model number from Jet was/is 708708.

EDIT: I found this at Amazon but the picture doesn't look like mine. Mine is metal mesh with some type of filter fabric sandwiched between the mesh layers. Maybe a call to Jet Customer Service could clarify what style the current model is.

This is why I LOVE this forum! Thanks guys, I'll take a look at the Jet washable, but I am thinking that i may be able to get a 12 X24 X 1 washable furnace filter at Lowes or HD.
