    Mystery Tool

I bought this tool a while back at a garage sale. I had never seen or heard of one like this, but now I love it.

It is a home-made tool, but the old-timer I bought it from said he had seen many similar ones made. I have taken pictures of it with one part missing. The missing part is from another tool that most of us have in our shops.

I placed a hammer in one picture to give a sense of scale - not to suggest what the mystery tool is used for.

    So, please provide two answers:

    - Name the Mystery Tool
    - Name the missing part

It looks like a scraper handle/holder with the scraper missing.

You got the first part - it is a scraper. But the part used for scraping does not come off of a scraper. It comes from another common shop tool.

How about a utility knife blade or a one sided razor blade?

Good guesses, but no prize yet. Once you see it, I think you will agree with me that it is a really good idea.

If it hasn't been guessed by morning, I'll post a picture of the assembled tool.

From the looks of the slot it appears to be like the ones I make to accommodate a jointer knife, or planer knife.

That was my guess too - looks like the 2 screws are made for one.

I bet a plane iron will fit that slot.

We have a weiner... I mean winner!

Isn't that a good idea? The steel in even the worst plane iron is much better than what is in just about any paint scraper short of the carbide ones. It is very stiff, keeps an edge really well and provides great practice for freehand sharpening.

I used it while taking a 100 year old door down to the wood and it worked really well.

Now you have something to do with those irons after you replace them with a Hock!

Dang! I was sure it was shifter handle from a 1914 Baker Electric and the missing part was the 'rest of the car'.

Maybe I'll get the next time.
