I think I may have been bitten...

    by the hand plane bug.

I bought a Bailey No. 5 type 15 (1931-1933) on ebay for $11. It is in good "working" shape, which is what I bought it for, but thoughts are starting to brew about japanning and electrolysis. I really only bought it as a tool to use but...

    Now I think I need a No. 7.

I'll post pics when I get time.

I thought maybe this was going to be about a Brown Recluse spider or a Coral snake. Even if it had been a rabid dog, there are shots to get you through that.

I am sorry to have to inform you, Mr Slick, that you have contracted Handplanecollectitus for which there is no known cure. The best you can do is treat the symtoms and keep the disease in check.

I recommend the #7 and low angle block plane for now. Understand that more exotic treatments WILL be required and the HPC progresses!

There is one possible cure: Promise yourself you will use the plane you own to complete a project before you buy another one. This will either keep the number of planes you own to a reasonable level or at least give you great exercise!

The guys with 50+ planes would have Popeye arms if they used them all!

Tom, the only known treatment is to ship all your hand planes to me ASAP! This will slow down the progress of the disease, but can't cure it completely.

You may have to continue sending me planes as you acquire them...

Tom - that disease can be kept semi in check as long as you make sure you don't get yourself a Lee Valley (Veritas) or Lie-Nielson. Don't even borrow one or you are a goner.

                  It's getting worse!

I already owned a low angle block plane, but it's bite wasn't to infectious as it's utility wasn't great but it was useful. After playing with the No 5 and realizing that even crusty rusty planes still function well I am scouring Ebay like a crack head thinking "that one is all there and is crusty enough I'll bet I get it for 12 bucks....my precious, precious.
I find myself ignoring family members to scour google for website about plane rehab and dating planes.

Somehow I thought this was going to be a cheap alternative to buying a delta planer.

I know of a guy in the Valley. He can get just about anything you need. I'll just take a taste - a minor handling fee, if you will. Fron me the caish and I'll hook you up.

Tom - you won't get one for $12 there but keep an eye on the Swap and Sell forum over at Woodnet. I picked up a user 1940's version #7 several months ago for $50 shipped. This thing was set up perfectly and could not be improved on right out of the wrapping.

Have fun and enjoy. I haven't been bitten yet, I got bit by pen turning.
