    Broken HF Lathe

Picked up an HF lathe and a set of lathe tools at a garage sale this morning for $15. Thought I had a great deal till I plugged it in. That will teach me to plug it in first. I plugged it in and pushed the on button but nothing happens. Any ideas on where to start looking for the problem? At least the set of tools work

On the upside I also got a near new Ryobi router table with a Ridgid router for $30 that DID work

First thing to do is pull the switch and make sure it's good. If that's the problem it's less than $5. Otherwise it's likely the motor. Not sure how much that will run.

    Which model is it?

You have not said if the motor is direct, or belt driven? If it is belt driven, you should have no problem with the motor replacement. They are to be found all over. Otherwise, if direct, first check that you have power to the motor wires. And if not, work back to find the cause.

        Check for power first.

At the recept, 120v. Check switch. Check motor with vom.

I'll double check but I'm pretty sure it's belt driven. I'm not sure of the model # I'll check on that tomorrow as well.

Had to replace the switch on my HF. The one that came with it was a POS. Picked up a replacement switch at Lowes that snapped right in for about $5

Most likely your problem is in the power switch, a lot of HF power tools are equiped with cheap switches. Their dust collectors and a couple of other tools come to mind with cheap switches. After determining where the problem is ( most likely the switch) buy a good American made replacement
one and it will do the job for a long time. eezlock
