    Broken Record Plane

Had one of those days today. I was working on a small project and accidentally knocked over my #5 Record plane. Of course it hit the concreat garage floor just right and broke in two pieces at the throat. And of course this was after spending a couple of hours with 400 grit paper makining everything perfect on the plane. It was finally a joy to use and I went an broke it. Darn!

Anybody know if you can find replacement body's for these planes.

I don't think that Record is still in business, so doubt if you could get a body. You could always get an old Stanley #5 on ebay, then use your sharp iron with it. They are surprisingly inexpensive.

you might be able to have it brazed back together by a welding/machine shop.

I have a bunch of planes that I am slowly working on to clean and rebuild. I would have to check what I have but may have spare parts or the whole plane. email me a picture of your broken one and I will compare.

E Bay is going to be your best shot. Brazing or TIG welding works for cracks but it would be hard to keep everything aligned on a full break.

I just checked and I do have a couple of No5 size (~14") one is an old sargent with a groved base that I want to keep but I would be happy to come to an arrangement on the other one.

I am not sure which make it is, the only markings are "Made in the USA" and "J4."

There are no obvious cracks, although the base is not perfectly flat (I am not sure if any ever are. I have both knob and handle in case yours dont fit.

Let me know what you would like to do - either way its fine. I will send you an email.

First I want to thank Poolhound for all of his efforts in reaching out to help. He has been very kind and generous with his time and effort in attempting to resolve my broken plane problem. Jon Thanks for all of your efforts.

About the same time I made the original post, I was at coffee with a group of friends and I was complaining about my broken plane. Tonight, one of these guys hands me a box with a bunch of plane parts. The box contained a few plane parts and plane bodies. He said take the stuff and use it or pass it on. I don’t know how he came up with the stuff and he said don’t ask, the story is just too long. The box contained a Sheffield body that looks like it will work. I I can make it work I will post the pictures.

                Thanks Again Jon

No problem, I hope it works out. I am hoping to salvage at least 3 or 4 good ones from the parts I have.

I have 2 good No 6 bodies and that grooved No 5 I mentioned which I hope to get cleaned up and working.

I cleaned up the plane, striped the handles and used an oil on the handles. Cleaned and smoothed the body to a 400 grit polish. So here iis the plane
