Porter-Cable 390 Low Profile Random Orbit Sander

Just received an email from Delta/PC containing info on their new low profile 5" random orbit sander, the 390. Looked like a great idea to me, so I googled it.

$210 from Toolbarn.com!!! and the item isn't available until early August. I still think its a great idea, but for $39 you can get the regular 5" porter cable ro at my local BORG! I'm having a hard time swallowing the $170 difference.

I'm betting that the $210 price is the MSRP. Usually, the MSRP is nothing more than a starting point for the different discount levels that the mfg. sets up for their customers. I'd be real surprised if that $210 will be the selling price come August. If it is, I doubt if they'll sell many of those sanders.

+1 on Dave's comment. On amazon.com the P-C 343VSK (5" VS ROS that would be theoretically closest to the new 390) has a "list price" of $141.68, actually sells for $79.99 -- about 44% off.

On the 390, Tool King shows a "list price" of $181.99, street price of $139.99 -- about 25% off, but their discounts are typically not as deep as amazon.com's. I would expect the amazon.com street price to come in around $120-130. Still pretty spendy for a 5" ROS.

$209.95 is the discounted price from Tool Barn. They list the MSRP as $368.56, although I do agree that those prices are frequently inflated. We'll just have to wee what it ends up selling for on Amazon. I'm definitely interested if the price is a little more realistic.

Perhaps PC is going after Festool?
