User made router lift - Where?

I remember seeing a site (or maybe in a book) where someone had made a router lift that cost two or three dollars to make. Does anyone know where I can find it? I've done searches, both Google and on this site, with no luck. I don't remember how it was made, but I remember being impressed with it. Should have saved it.

Niki posted this one a while ago.

Niki, Niki Niki, and I believe I should mention, Niki, did it. It did involve using a plunge router (as opposed to a fixed), but I really liked the idea (and felt stupid that I didn't think of it).

Two of the four threads, the pictures are gone (were in photobucket), but two remain:

edit, too slow researching the links.

Thanks for the posts. Nikki's lift wasn't the one I was thinking of, but it certainly looks like it would work well. I recall someone on this site posted that they made the one I'm thinking of. Can't remember who it was, or what thread it was in. It wasn't very recent. Thanks again.

I don't know if it is what you are looking for but I posted information on the lift I use which cost about $50 in parts. I modified the dimensions but used the ideas from a magazine article from American Woodoworker. It was in the March 2004 issue and was entitled "Shop-made Router Lift". You can get the article for $3 or the whole magazine for $5 by calling 715 246 4344 (or at least you could last time I checked). The lift attaches to the back of the router table so you can hinge the top to make bit changing bits easy. The lift slides on two machined rods I got from McMaster Carr (1 inch diameter). That is the primary expense. Oilite bushings in wooden block slide on the rods. A 3/8 threaded rod has 16 threads per inch and moves the lift up and down. One revolution is thus 1/16 inch movement.

            Jim,

That wasn't the one I was thinking of. I seem to remember the author mentioning that the total cost was either $2 or $3, and it looked pretty good. I think the heading was something like "My $2.00 shop made router lift". Having said that, I'll see if I can find your post. I can't justify spending big bucks for a router lift, but I might consider $50 or so. Thanks.

              Hi Ed

I believe that you are not looking for this one because you replied to the post.

But, the pics were missing - as LinuxRandel said - so, I uploaded them...

Thank you for updating it, Nikki. That's not the one I was referring to, but I think it's pretty similar. As soon as I saw the pics, I remembered the thread. Thanks again for a great idea. I saved the thread to my computer.

                          Router Crank

                          Hi Ed,

In Bill Hylton's book "Router Magic", page 177, has instructions on how to make your own router lift by modifying the lead screw and adding a crank. This is for a plunge router.

I hope you find the info useful.

Thanks, David. I was thinking of making one like in Nikki's thread. But I'll see if the library has that book. Never hurts to look at all options. Thanks again.
