    Irwin clamps

I use the Irwin quick grip clamps. The shorter 12" versions are on sale in every store I go into. However, it frosts me when I see the price jacked up on the longer versions when the only change is a few inches of 1/2" X 1/8" bar stock.
Consequently, I bought some steel bar, popped the pin at the end of a 12" clamp, and slid the pistol grip off the clamp. I then rounded over the end of the bar stock with a file and pushed the pistol grip onto the bar. A hole drilled into the bar stock permits bolting the static end of the 12" clamp to the bar. I now have a 40" clamp at quite a bit less than the Irwin version.
    regards,
    Charlie

Around 3 bucks. The Do It Best website says a 6' piece is $5.79
The same site prices 2 6" clamps at $20 and one 36" clamp at $27

No, my local hardware store carries the Do It Best brands.
The bar stock is produced by Steel Works and I have seen it at Lowe's, the Borg and Ace hardware.
