As far as I'm concerned, want = need = must have.
Do you need that tool?

Of course I need that tool (to add to my collection).
I might even: 1. Open it up someday or, 2. Maybe even use it.
When I asked my Dad why he had so many tools, I will never forget his response:
"If it comes down to a choice between a new tool and lunch, I will go hungry"
all i can guess is that it is hereditary.
Now how hungry will I be if I buy this hand-powered table saw
Needlessly needy

Absolutely indispensable:
SCMS mounted on Ridgid MSUV
B&D 18V drill/driver
BT3000 with Skil 1810 router mounted under A/T (and Forrest Woodworker II blade)
Tool purchase that had the most immediate impact: air compressor.
I own a HF benchtop DP that I purchased to turn a TV tray table into a cribbage board. I've used it for a few other projects since then, but I have some concerns about its usefulness going forward. (too small.)
I'm in the middle of a buying binge, having recently purchased a 3"x21" belt sander, a 3-1/4" planer, and this weeks MVT (most valuable tool,) the Kreg pocket jig Master System. (I used it to get rid of some nasty squeaks under the tile floor in the foyer, which had been a source of aggravation for over a year!) I'm buying a Makita 2012NB thickness planer that was listed a couple of days ago on CL (at $285, probably the most I've ever spent on one tool.) And I've drawn a bead on a 3 base DW router kit on eBay that I intend to bid on. (The Skil can't handle the task of raising a door panel.)
Most glaring need: DC.
Tool I'd own if money grew on trees: Festool plunge saw with guide rail."I know it when I see it." (Justice Potter Stewart)Comment

Hi, my name is Ted and I'm a Toolaholic. I have a collection of tools that I need to start reducing. I have backups to backups. I have 2 BT3100's as I so love the saw that I wanted backup of everything. I recently found a BT3000 locally for cheap, so I bought that too. Band Saw, Scroll Saw, SCMS, RAS, bench top DP and floor DP, all kinds of cordless tools. Man I could spend all night listing these blasted tools. I even have three air compressors. I'm constantly upgrading my tools when I see something cheap (**** that bargain forum!) and I don't really get rid of the tools that I'm replacing.
Do I need them all? No, but I'm a firm believer in having the right tool for the right job. (At least I always tell my wife that yes the tool is needed for the job at hand). Sometimes I feel as though I live vicariously through my tools. I can picture myself making awesome stuff with them, but I never really have the time to put into these awesome projects.
I can't wait until they come out with some kind of patch that I wear when I go to Rockler or Woodcraft so that I don't purchase every last tool they have.Ted KitchComment

I'm getting scared. I'm finally at the point that I can walk into and out of Woodcraft empty handed. The Grizzly catalog isn't getting abused like it used to. I seldom look at Craig's List.
I have some tools that don't get much use but they are there when I need them. I'm still building stuff on a regular basis but I'm finally down to the point of really only needing small stuff that makes certain tasks easier. Never thought I'd get to this point.

I could not agree more, back when I was working for a retail design firm we had a very nice Porter Cable portaband and after using it for many thing in the field I've aways wanted one for may very own. Sound like a good excuse to go shopping.I have a bunch of tools that get used less than others.
A drill press is one of my most used tools.
It is a Craftsman radial benchtop press.
I think that once you have one, you'll see how much more you use it.
My other major sleeper of a tool is the "Portaband" portable electric hacksaw.

I am in this catagory myself Popeye. I am still sitting on a 10% Woodcraft birthday coupon I received 3 weeks ago for April. Last 2 times there I left empty handed. That use to be impossible for me to do.I'm getting scared. I'm finally at the point that I can walk into and out of Woodcraft empty handed. The Grizzly catalog isn't getting abused like it used to. I never used to walk out of the place at least $50 poorer. I do have one more thing I need though. First of the month I'm going to HF to get a hydraulic lift table to use as both an adjustable height assembly table and infeed table.
