    Gloat!

I went to a car show / swap meet in New Braunsfel today. Not really anything of great interest but, on the way home, I stopped at the local Borg.

Picked up a thermometer for my charcoal grill, wandered the store a bit, then made the obligatory swing through the tool dept. On the markdown shelf was a Ryobi LiIon kit. No price so I ran down an employeee in the hardware section. He said the kit was used for demo and marked down to $224 but someone had stolen one of the batteries yesterday.

$75 off and the battery costs $119. Thanks but no thanks!

I was looking at the display and noticed it had 3 batteries. The display for the flashlight/drill combo had its battery. Found 2 employees, one with a customer and the other on his way to break. When I told the latter about possibly finding the 'missing' battery he said the batteries in the display were glued in the tools. "OK, thanks for the answer."

Wait for the other employee. Tell him the now longer story. He found the glue line amusing but obviously not true. "Batteries are serialized to the kit, lets check it out." Sure enough, I had solved the case of the 'stolen' battery. Kit is still a demo and the price reduction stands.

    25% OFF!

That's funny! I love when they clearly lie to you, that's the best kind of customer service. Glad that you got it worked out, sounds like a great deal! I'm jealous.

No wonder I have spent so much money on cordless tools. It seems I need a new set every week. The batteries just seem to die and after I followed the advice of the guy to glue my batteries in.....I just concluded they were disposable. They seem to give me extra parts with every kit though. I have a collection of spare batteries and chargers. Now with Ryobi and B&D, at least I can buy just the tool I need to go with these extra batts. Save some money that way.

I did notice that Bosch has actual display batteries. They are just a clear case with no cells inside. Now that makes a lot more sense to have dedicated diplays. No need to GLUE those in.
The bad part about that though is that you can't tell the actual weight and balance of the tool before you buy.
