Brought the new Jet Mini home yesterday, and thought long and hard about location. I don't have a lot of extra space, and didn't really want to stock another lathe station, so it occurred to me that putting "Junior" beside "Big Momma" (all 7 feet of her) might suit the bill. Here is my solution... After giving birth to a multitude of pens, Big Momma now goes back to bigger jobs, although I will keep a triple buffing mandrel mounted up, which can be used without moving anything. And the best part is that Junior and his shelf can pop right off in 30 seconds if Big Momma and I gotta dance...

Definitely a great solution. And I think that you should submit your idea to the woodworking magazines. You have a got a winner, and you also might help sell a few mini lathes, as now folks won't have to find or make room in their shops for them.

Your ingenuity doesn't surprise me at all. Kinda reminds me of a sewing machine pop up. A real space saver. Should work just fine as long as it "hangs in there".

Thanks, guys... She's not goin' anywhere, C-Man (I sat on the shelf before I perched "Junior" up there, and there are retainers built-in, in case he decides to go for a walk...Comment

UC,
Looks great. Presuming you have room under the table - have you thought about adding a stringer/crossmember under the table of the same dimensions as the table to attach the minilathe for temporary storage, or would the shavings from Big Mama be a problem?Bill in Buena ParkComment

Good idea, but my sawhorses usually dwell underneath there (had them out for another project). Those x-braces take up a lotta room, but they leave a perfect niche for the horses. If I turn 180-degrees, there's an assembly table with a shelf underneath for the Mini and its bed.Comment

What a great solution to an age old problem. I expect this one to be pilfered several times along the way.Comment
