Thank you to everyone that replied to my 2 separate posts on this subject. You guys are a wealth of knowledge. Yesterday my father & I went window shopping for planers. When I got to his house he was doing some last minute price checking on the internet. I brought him up to speed on the Lowe’s discount & the HD price matching plus an additional 10% discount. He showed me that the Lowe’s website had a price drop to $455.68 on the DW 735. HD's price was $495. He told me that he thought the price already reflected the discount & I disagreed thinking that it was just a regular price drop with an additional 17% taken off at the register. We agreed that we should just stop at the local Lowe’s to get this straightened out before heading out of town to HD.
The 2 tool dept. associates we talked to were not aware of the price drop in the system and they both had different opinions about weither this included the 17% discount or not. It didn’t take but just a second to figure out that with HD’s match plus 10% discount would still come up short by 7% so we were going to just make our purchase in town at Lowe’s. I finally got my father onboard with the idea that we would get 17% off of the reduced price DW735 & 15% off the shop vac. Father decided that he was going to be the one that purchased the planer since he will use it more & he was also going to purchase another shop vac since mine is mainly for work use. Off to the register we go with both items on a cart. My father (bless his heart) will argue a person in the ground if he thinks he is right, even more so since he got caught up in a same day company price increase at Lowe’s. (that’s another story) I am getting to be the same way, so I knew the slightest problem would mean all out war at the cash register, either between my father & I, or between us & the establishment.
At the register I noticed the price matched the internet & asked her if she had taken off the discount. She wasn’t even aware of any store discounts & said “if there is a discount, the register already has the right price.” I asked her to call the manager. The assistant manager showed up, so I explained our dilemma & he was dumb-fuzzled as what to do. Then he grabbed a calculator & did the math. The new price in the computer (that nobody was aware of) did reflect the 17% discount. He asked if we still wanted it. I told him no because HD would match their price plus give another 10% off. He said “yeah that is their policy. I’ll do that if you want it.”
We bought the planer at $414.25 & the shop vac but something was bothering me for some reason. Halfway home it hit me. In a hurry this morning, while rushing to get ready, I had called HD & asked them about their veterans discount & competitor price policy. Just then I could hear the guy’s voice echo in my head “We match their price plus an additional 10% off, but not on sales prices.” This meant Lowe’s shouldn’t have taken the extra 10% off. My father said we should go back & settle up to make it right. After a brief discussion about all the trouble we caused & would cause again if we did this, we both decided that we could still sleep ok that night if we didn’t go back.
