    Hand Plane Totes

It appears I'll have to fabricate a couple of these. One tote is clearly split halfway between the top and the base, though it may be repairable. Another doesn't feel terribly tight. A third one has a sizable chip in the top.

It appears totes are mostly made from Rosewood or some other hard African wood species. I could buy enough Rosewood to make new totes for all of my planes for less than the cost of buying a replacement but I'm wondering if maple or ash are also suitable since I have some of both?

I'd save the old rosewood handles and maybe even fix them up, but these planes are meant for working, not dust collection so appearance is not a high priority..

Replacement totes are readily available for many planes, if you don't feel like fabricating, but making your own does allow for personal fitting and that unique touch.
