    Sharpening Hand Saws

I was given a Disston crosscut saw and a backsaw by an old friend of my FIL. I would like to use them but they need sharpening, teeth need setting, etc. Anybody ever done this? Is this something I reasonably could do myself? Are there any special tools I would need?

The chief cause of failure in this life is giving up what you want most for what you want at the moment.

You need a saw vise, 60 degree file (equilateral triangle) and a saw tooth
setter. The saw vise is nothing special. You can make your own. I bought a
set of files at HF and the setter at an antique store, but I know companies do
sell new ones. Here's a good tutorial on the process. I touched up the teeth
on my backsaw and removed most of the set so I can get narrower pins when
I do handcut DTs. I haven't taken a really old saw and brought it back to life,
though. I know one guy who files down the factory teeth and then cut all the
    teeth back in just because.
