    Thickness Sander

Hey Guys, My thickness Sander is coming into reality. I started it yesterday. I now have the Cabinet built that will house it and the Motor is mounted in it. I also cutout all the 3/4" MDF for the drum. Yesterday I made and glued up the Rollers for the conveyor belt. I have taken pictures so enjoy them.

Awesome. Building a tool instead of buying one has an immense appeal - lots of fun, and cheap! Please, continue and by all means, document what you do so the rest of us can play at home.

This is the pulley that drives the Drum Shaft and the bearing. It's a 5/8" diam bearing & shaft.

This is the drum shaft looking at the pulley driving it.

The Sander was a Shopnotes design issue #86 and I modified it to suit my needs. I made it larger and self propelled. The conveyor belt will be an auto feed. The motor for the conveyor is an electric 12v motor from a cars power window. It will be powered by a computers power supply. Here is a link to another one that is on the net.

I will be writing a full building description on my blog and I will post it later on.

Looking good!!! How about a little comment or two on the pictures / thickness sander in general, something that I can use to build my own.

I did notice that two of the pictures are the same (42qm4) and the third link down (37qh7) did not work (at least for me).

How did you get your drum sanded down to the proper diameter? I may have to backorder that Shop Notes mag to see the specifics.

Updated pictures for the Thickness Sander Project

Hello everyone, Well It's been a while and I have been working on the Thickness Sander. Trouble is I did not get as much done as I wanted to. I had Surgery on my Shoulder ,for a dislocation accident, on March 14th. So Now I'm out of the shop for the next month and a half. But before I had the operation I was able to mount the conveyor belt system and make the slots for the up and down adjustments. As I said before I will be posting a building story on my blog and give all that info in the future. For now here are the pictures.

Can you give us any details on that panel saw in the background?

Looking forward to your blog. Take care of that shoulder.

Listen to your physical therapist. I've had both shoulders done (rotator cuff) and they're good as new.

                  Good luck.

                  J.D.

                        Update on the Thickness Sander

Well, Now that my shoulder has healed enough to get back out into the shop, I started back on the sander. I have good news and Bad news concerning it. First the bad, As it turns out the power window motor idea is a NO GO. It ended up not having enough torque. So Due to money (or the lack there of), I decided that a hand feed will have to do. Now the good news, It actually sanded a piece of Hemlock today. I am very pleased with the results. So now the next step is to build the micro adjust system for it then the dust collection box. Here are some pictures of the sender with sand paper on the drum and if I can get it to work a 30 second video of the first piece going thru it.

                          Update on the Thickness Sander

Yippeeeee!!!!!! The Thickness Sander is Completed. I built a dust hood out of MDF and made my adapter for the D/C hose. I also built the Micro adjust. I think I'm going to rebuild that though. I don't like the way it moves. Hope you guys Like it. It works great by the way. I sanded some MDF and there was little to no dust on the conveyor belt.
