    Sandpaper vs non-slip strips

Any reason(s) for or against using adhesive-backed black rubber(?) non-slip strips designed for stairways on one's miter fence and other places where you want to increase friction on wood?

I've been having trouble finding rolls of adhesive-backed sandpaper, but HD has the non-slip strips. Perhaps you know where the sandpaper can be found? And what grit is best for this purpose?

I just use a spray-on adhesive that is not permanent (can't recall the exact name but made by 3M, got it at Lowes).

Rubber strips may be compressible and might throw off your cut.

Don't know if there is an "ideal" sandpaper grit to use - I use 220 Seems to work fine everywhere I've tried it.

Having done this sort of thing for years...

180 grit on wood using Titebond II: Always spread the glue to ONLY the wood, NOT the sandpaper - the sandpaper will wrinkle DAHIKT!

Clamp for at least an hour.

Non-slip strips are too coarse IMO.

Check with an automotive paint supply. Some of the strips for in-line sanders come adhesive backed.

I get my adhesive back sand-paper for scary-sharp by the 30' roll from Klingspors out of NC, David.. www.workingshop.com

With that said, my BIL who is a shop foreman at Delta AL gives me rolls of the very heavy duty stuff similar to the stair thing you mentioned. They use it of all the tow vehicles, etc. on an area you put your foot on for safety as those vehicles are operated in all weather conditions. Comes in handy, but probably much to heavy for the miter.

I have never tried Rod's method, but may. The 3M spray adhesive that Mildoc mentioned will work also as I have put a ton of head-liners in old muscle cars using it. Also added outdoor carpet to the bottom of jon boats over ply many times. BTW.. it comes in several sticking levels.. Super Duper.. Heavy Duty.. etc. etc.

And I agree with Rod on 180 for the fence. I use it on a SCMS fence to keep miters cuts from "walking the fence" or creeping. I wouldn't go less than 150 with 120 at max. Should not be necessary.
