    Need Help on Jointer Purchase

    I've had a Jet open-stand 6" jointer for about 3-years now. Has worked fine - no big complaints. Like many others I'd like a larger one but have no space. Only thing I was looking to improve on is dust collection. The Jet is OK but not great.

    I just saw this on my local CL and was wondering if it would be worth the bother to pick up - seems like a good deal especially w/ the extra knives and knife setting tool. But, don't have any experience with Grizzly or have a feel if the DC will be improved much. Basically I want to upgrade and don't know if the Grizzly is a comparable or better machine.

    Opinions from anyone with experience w/ this jointed appreciated.

      That looks like a good deal. I don't own one so I can't comment on the DC issue but if it was me I would look at upgrading to a bigger one.

      Of course the bargain hunter in me says to buy it, see which one is the better one and sell the other one off.

          Seems like and expensive lateral move. Can you post some pics of your jointer, with the question of how to improve its dust collection? I would think that would be cheaper.
          She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

              IIRC the actual jointer portion is nearly identical....if I'm wrong, then the Griz's fence is more substantial. Also, IIRC, the Jet's motor is 3/4hp on that model, but it could be 1hp. The Griz is 1hp. The enclosed base, and possibly the 1hp motor are slight upgrades. Since your Jet is likely worth $150 also, there's essentially a minor upgrade available to you for nothing more than a bit of time.

              FWIW, I've got the 1182HW and have been pleased with it within the limitations of it's size capacity. No issues. Wood Mag rated #1 in Sept, 2001 over the Ridgid, Jet, two Delta's and a Bridgewood.

                  Thanks for the input. The seller responded to my e-mail of interest. I was the first to reply to him, but, typical CL - he's opening his sale at 2pm tomorrow and first with the cash wins. Not worth a 50 mi car ride for me.

                      Now I'm not going to watch CL anymore.....well maybe not until tomorrow. The seller actually had the nerve to e-mail me that the item he was selling at 2PM tomorrow was sold today????????

                          Just a thought about chip collection. A lot of jointers have a relief around the cast iron base which allows chips to fly out instead of being sucked up by the DC. You can stuff grouting sponges (or car wash sponges) under the base to plug up those reliefs. Cheap and easy. Works perfectly on my generic Taiwanese jointer.

                              At least he was good enough to tell you. Imagine how you would would feel if you drove the 50 miles tomorrow and found it sold when you got there...
