    Disc and belt sander?

I am replacing my eight year old combination disc and belt sander (12" disc, 6" x 48" belt). The machine's motor is fried, the bearings need replacement, and the tracking adjustment is really bad.

The new machine will be used in a high school woodshop. It will be used constantly for about 5 hours each day. So I am looking for a quality machine. So far I like the Jet combination sander...but I am still open to suggestions. I have looked at Delta, General, and Jet machines. Is there any other companies that I should look at?

    Thanks for your help.

I have the Rikon but it's open base leaves a lot to be desired as far as dust collection. It's a work horse though.

Both ends of my search. Smaller and larger belt sanders

Who here uses a grinder in their shops?

I have been using my belt sander with a homemade stand (3" x 21") as a belt sander, and there are times I would like a smaller one as well. I've been thinking of the multitool ones (http://www.ausmultitool.com/Item/MT362TG.htm) since I also do some metal work (mechanical).

That would add the disc sander, is there a larger one that is just a belt sander?

I was going to recommend checking out Steel City, but I don't see one one their website.

I have decided on the Powermatic OES9138 ossilating edge sander. I decided to go with this sander because it will allow me to do everything I could do with my old 12" disc and 6" x 48" belt sander plus a whole lot more. My students do different projects each year. I have to limit the size or style of the projects because we do not have the machinery to do what the student wants. This will be a start of re-tooling my shop.

On another note...has anyone checked out the JDS Multi-Router? This is a sweet little machine. I got to play with one last thursday...I am currently raising funds with my students to purchase one.

              Anyone near Paw Paw Michigan?

If you haven't pulled the trigger yet, check out the Steel City 6x89 osc. edge sander. Looks impressive and on sale $950.

As usual the Steel City is just a rebadged product that has already been on the market for years. This whole company has really let my expectations down! At least there is some innovation with the granite surface tops they are using in some products.

Anyway, this edge sander is a rebadged Jet. Sears now sells Jet and until yesterday had free shipping and 20% off making it $783 delivered.

Jeff, there is a BIG difference between PM that you are looking at and this type of unit. Of course you know that. Moving from a 6" x 48" combo to that PM is a monster move. Certainly be the last edge sander they would ever need.

I am curious, what make and model is this? Do you know what it would cost to fix it?

The make is Delta, Model is 31-280.

Delta has the motor on back order until 12/10/07. The cost of a new motor is $300. To service the motor at a local shop is clost to the cost of replacing the motor. It needs new starting capictors, new brushes, new bushings, and the winding has a short.

The berings for the rollers were replaced in 2003 (2 years after new). They need to be replaced again.

The machine is not designed to be used for 8 hours a day. I need an industrial machine.

Man you guys have a nice shop budget! Most schools I know of are closing their shop programs.
