    multi master tool question

I know that the fein multi master has been discussed here before, but i am now ready to buy one and need to know if anyone here can recommend the best place to buy it.

Looking for best price of course but also top notch customer service.

    Thanks in advance

There are a few companies that make tools so well that the need for "customer service" in terms of repairs or fixing from a local repair company is NOT a strongly needed consideration. Fein is one of those.

IF you want the cheapest price, I would say Amazon is the place to go. I would wait until another or two comment on this rather than just taking my opinion.

The biggest problem will be getting replacement consumables. I get mine from Amazon too, but consumables are high priced, IMO. But it does the work in a way that nothing else comes close.

I seem to recall a sale at rockler of $199 for the RS version. Not completly sure of that. I paid about $249 at coastal and thought that was a good deal at the time.
As for service. It was good to know there are service centers in the area. The variable speed on mine went out within a month and I had to spend about $8 to send it to Cleveland. Problem is, when they know it is a warranty repair they take their good old time repairing it. About 3 weeks in my case.
Great tool but the blades are really expensive.
Why doesn't the word 'planing' show up in my computer spell check?

SALTY, This is good to know. I had mine in the states, brought it here to Japan, used it here and carried it back to the States again and used it there. So far, no problems.

In Japan, for the tools that I have here, I look on line for service centers when I do have a problem. I buy at the cheapest or most convenient place and send to the service center for a repair.

          multi master dealer

I found this company on the net, the prices seem to be good and only $6.95 for shipping.

Has anyone had any dealings with Tyler Tool?

Be careful buying a MultiMaster sight-unseen. This is because Fein recently introduced the new QuickIN tool-less blade change feature, which no longer uses allen wrenches. The blades and other accessories now have star-shaped holes, rather than plain circles. Now the net is flooded with people offering "deals" on various MM kits, but they aren't particularly upfront about them being outdated units. Buyer beware. (This doesn't mean that you shouldn't save some cash by buying the older model, but you should just know what you're getting.)

              Thank you for the replies.

I did not know that there was a newer model out.

Found a local supplier and bought the FMM 250Q, retail price was $314.00, paid $274.05 + tax.

That's a pretty good deal. The "Q" in the model number denotes the new QuickIN model.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here....but..

I believe the new tools will work on the older models but not the other way around. All of my tools have the star shaped centers but the inner most points form a circle that fits the circular shaft.

I think you are correct, Salty. I do know that the new MM requires the new attachments, but I think the older MM can use either. Wouldn't make sense for them to have to make two different sets of attachments.

The older MM can use either. When I purchased mine, I got the older model and I've been very happy with it. However, the unique design of the new accessories does provide a very significant advantage in that the tools don't slip and the quick change is nice.

Anyone that can get the older model will not be disappointed. I'm hoping that they will sell a retrofit for the older model to use the star configuration of the newer model. The quick change is convenient, but not 100% needed for me, but the non-slippage of the star design is very nice.

                      Ted Kitch

I have the 4-star adapter and it works great. I used to have to be careful tightening the accessories onto the shaft to prevent slippage but with the 4-star adapter, it cleaned that up a ton. It has a rough side that creates friction with the shaft and then the 4-stars on the other side that mate with the accessories.
