    Chisel caps

Warning: this is probably the most trivial/inconsequential question ever asked about tools.

Does anybody know if anyone sells those plastic caps most chisels come with? (If so, who?)

Every other tool googaw and accessory is for sale somewhere, but I've never seen chisel caps. Maybe that's not the right name.

I can't be the only chisel owner who's ever accidentally vacuumed one up and didn't discover it until the trash went out. (Well, maybe I am, but somebody else must have needed to replace one or cap a chisel that didn't have one.)

    Thanks for any input.

Well, one trivial question begets another : why do you need those caps?

I tried to save some of mine, but when the first of those went by the way of the shop-vac (no, you are not the only one ), i decided i'd just allow the chisels to stay on the shop made chisel rack without their caps.

now you telling me i was wrong?

There's good news, and there's bad news.

The good news is, you can buy them from Lee Valley. They call them "chisel guards."

The bad news is, you can buy them from Lee Valley. Meaning, placing an order for these chisel guards will get you on the LV mailing list -- and that's a slippery slope if ever there was one.

I suggest a chisel rack, or perhaps a case to hold them. A year ago I bought some stuff from a small cabinet shop that was closing. The owner, a relatively young man, had made a beautiful case for his chisels as a class project that included magnets to hold the flat side firmly against the case. I built a much less fancy version of the same for mine and it works well enough.

I bet I've looked for as many of those caps as I have for glue bottle caps. Seems like at first use, that thing just decides to hide on me. I really try to be diligent and keep track of them. Maybe a new invention should be a little leather doo wah of a case with a belt clip just for plastic caps. Maybe a combo tape measure/cell phone/plastic cap case.

                A little cheaper alternative ....

along with the box from these,

since everybody that needs to check their DC setup should have a box of those around

Seriously tho', My grandfather had a LOT of edges around the shop and routinely made his own covers from cereal boxes and masking tape.
If it ain't broke.. don't fix it!!!... but you can always 'hop it up'

I have some that I keep in a roll that I like to have a cap on. Some are in a rack and don't have caps. I've got a mix of caps, some that came with chisels, some from a set I got from Rockler, and some very similar to Thom2's suggestion. Main difference from Thom is that I used duct tape because it seemed more in keeping with the spirit of things.
