    Sticky double-square

Hi all. I just picked up a Starrett double-square. The rule doesn't slide smoothly when the adjusting screw is loosened. Would it be OK if I put a little oil in the groove of the rule, or is the stickiness somehow normal? Thx.

It probably has a coating to prevent rust/corrosion before being sold. I'd try cleaning it good with spirits then applying a thin coat of wax.

As Ken says, start by cleaning it thoroughly, and then maybe try some wax. I wouldn't oil it -- too much risk of the oil migrating onto your workpiece and complicating the finishing step.

Starrett squares have a little spring in the locking mechanism. Inexpensive adjustable squares typically do not. Result is that the Starretts take a little more effort to slide the blade than does the average Stanley or Johnson or whatever. You can lighten the spring tension by pushing up on the knurled knob with your fingers after you loosen it, but I rarely do this.
