    Anyone ever try honing their own TS blades?

    I know it sounds crazy. But I do touch-up my router bits and have received excellent service from them. Sending blades out is only about $20, but then you probably wait too long before getting them sharpened.

    So I was thinking that I could cut a block of wood at the correct angle, to support my diamond plate, and then run it under the teeth a few times once every few weeks. The idea is to keep the blade relatively sharp and prolong the periods before full-blown grinding is required.

    I found this posting at another site from someone that does this and seems to have good luck:

    As late as the early 1980's, high speed steel (HSS) router bits and
    saw blades were still the norm, and carbide-tipped cutters were
    more or less reserved for 'serious' shops. Times have changed,
    thankfully, and research into new forms of carbide and new processes
    used to manufacture the materials have made carbide the most cost-
    efficient cutter material for just about anybody's shop needs.
    Strangely enough, though, (at least in my mind), there is still a
    rather powerful mystique surrounding carbide tooling which causes most
    woodworkers to believe that sharpening dull carbide tipped bits and
    blades is something that must be done by commercial sharpening shops.

    This couldn't be further from the truth, and I think most people, with
    reasonable care, can get much better results by doing the job themselves
    than they're likely to get from a sharpening service. I know that's
    held true in my own experience.

    There are a number of different grades of carbide commonly used in saw
    blades, router bits, and shaper cutters, but they all share the basic
    qualities of superior hardness, heat resistance, and brittleness. All
    require diamond stones to sharpen and hone their edges, but fortunately,
    the diamond abrasives needed are not expensive, and for the cost of one
    decent router bit, you can buy a pair of diamond hones that will sharpen
    dozens of carbide tips many times over. The hones I prefer are called
    'paddle hones' -- basically a flat plastic stick, one end of which has
    a diamond embedded metal pad attached. Using them is quite straight-
    forward, as you'll see shortly.

    First, though, it's worthwhile noting that since carbide tools last much
    longer than HSS tooling, they have a much greater opportunity to become
    fouled by resins and oils that occur naturally in woods. These resins
    adhere to the teeth, the heat from friction hardens them, and they actually
    may cause a blade or bit to seem dulled, even though it isn't. Your first
    course of action, then, should be to examine your carbide tips often, and
    clean them regularly. Soaking the tool or blade in a citrus oil soap is
    the best method I've found for cleaning cutters. Most solvents will also
    work, but the one time I used lacquer thinner to clean some sawblades, it
    took the labelling right off the blades in a matter of minutes, and from
    that point on I've used the citrus oil route. In any case, a 15 to 30
    minute soaking followed by a light scrubbing with a toothbrush or a small
    brass-bristled brush will remove any gunk that's likely to be found on your
    carbide tooling. You may find that the tool wasn't even dull at all, and
    that nothing further is needed for the moment. Note that before cleaning
    or sharpening bearing-guided bits and cutters, the bearing should first be
    removed so as not to compromise its lubrication.

    Should you choose to touch up the edges, it's a very simple procedure. All
    carbide router bits and shaper cutters have flat faces supporting the edge.
    It's this 'leading' face of the bit, opposite the bevelled, or trailing face
    that you want to dress. Take a medium diamond hone, wet it in either plain
    water or slightly soapy water, and begin honing the flat face. Don't worry
    about the bevel -- with carbide, there is no burning of the bevel and no wire
    edge to concern yourself with, so treat it as though you were flattening the
    back of a chisel or plane iron. Keep the surface wet, and stop honing as
    soon as the surface has a uniform sheen and color, then move on to the next
    face. You may be surprised that it only takes a few strokes from the hone to
    dress the face, but resist the temptation to continue, or you risk shortening
    the life of the cutter by changing its profile. Repeat the honing with a fine
    diamond paddle, and if you really want to do the job right, follow up with an
    ultra-fine. The edge is not going to feel as sharp as a well-honed high speed
    steel edge, and indeed, it won't be. It wasn't when the tool was brand new,
    either, and it never will be -- that's the limitation inherent in carbide, at
    least for the present. But it will be sharp -- if you've been careful, it will
    almost certainly be as sharp or sharper than it was when it was brand new.

    For the carbide tips on saw blades, the procedure is almost identical. Hone
    the flat, leading faces of the tips, taking care to keep the hone flat against
    the face of the carbide. Unlike HSS blades, carbide blades cut along the sides
    the teeth as well as along the tips, so be careful not to round these edges over
    as you work. Do not attempt to hone the side faces of the carbide tips -- those
    edges will naturally sharpen as the face of the tooth is dressed. When you've
    finished honing the tooth faces with the fine or ultra-fine paddles, you may
    find it necessary to just touch the top of the tooth with the extra-fine hone.
    If you choose to do this, again be very careful to just barely polish the carbide.
    Any more than that and you risk irreparably changing the shape of the tooth. At
    all times, take care to keep the hone flat against the surface you're dressing.

    And that's all there is to it. Chances are that your carbide will be every bit
    as sharp as it was when new, and it's entirely likely that it will be noticeably
    sharper. It's almost certainly sharper than it would be after being ground by a
    sharpening shop, and you've removed far less carbide, increasing the life and
    accuracy of the tool. Practice on your oldest bits and blades first while you
    get the hang of things, and by the time you get around to your best tooling,
    you'll be sharpening carbide better, and maybe even faster, than the pros.

    But I wonder if one could really keep a straight angle by hand.
    Seems this would be important.

    Have not tried to hone, but sharpening table saw blades on ones own doesn't seem crazy to me.

    I first tried this with a good quality fine diamond disk for the dremel.
    Took an old generic 24T carbide blade I was otherwise going to throw away and carefully sharpened each tooth by freehand! an excellent restoration.

    It worked so well, I made a jig that would bring the rotary in and out in order to rotate the TS blade and sharpen the face of every other tooth. Flip the tool to the other side and sharpen the remaining teeth.

    Maybe a larger disk and jig for router bits...

      It sorta reads like you're sharpening the sides of the teeth. Am I getting that right? Do you have any pics of your jig or process?

        No technique tips, but for about $12 I bought a set of jewelery makers diamond files. There are 9 or 10 or them, in three grits (supposedly)...The shapes are a very narrow file (roughly 1/8"), a wider file (1/4"?), a round file, and something else I don't remember.

        Very, very useful for a wide variety of small edges that need to be sharper--just two or three swipes do it. Pencil sharpeners, vegetable peelers, and scratch awls are just a few of the things that can be sharpened with them.

        I've also used the wide variety of diamond burrs available for rotary tools in assorted sharpening tasks--such as poking a small conical one through the holes of a food processor grater disk.

          This seems like it would be a good experiment. Start with two identical blades and compare (don't use your good blade untill you know).
          She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

            while i a would like to be able to do this for myself i wonder about tooth setting

            i have tried on old 24 T framing blade and my 4 1/2 grinder, the teeth where sharp but the tooth set was out of shape. i had a friend that that owned a foley/bellsaw sharping system
            that would sharpen all my blades for $1 apiece but this person passed away. i would very much like to own one of these someday for they will sharpen anything with a blade but on ebay there still $300 to $500 for the just the saw blade sharpener

            but what i was getting at was it had a tooth setting anvil and a blade anvil for setting the teeth and hamming the blades back into balance

              In "200 Original Shop Aids & Jigs for Woodworkers," Rosario Capotosto has two different methods for jointing 'circular saw' blades.

              The first is done with the blade in place on the table saw. Make sure it is unplugged.

              "Lower the arbor until the blade is below, but not touching, an oilstone supported by two wood blocks [one on each side of the blade]. Raise the arbor while firmly holding the stone down until the blade teeth just touch the stone.

              "Slowly rotate the blade backwards by hand to grind the teeth points lightly until all the teeth show that they have been touched by the tone. ...If the belt drive belt is out of reach you will need an assistant."

              For raker teeth on a combination blade, put a file [presumably the classic file for sharpening saw blades, the name of which I've forgotten, but for carbide you'd want a diamond file] on a block, perpendicular to the blade. Use wood blocks to keep the blade stationary. and "slide it forward to obtain a square, true cut. File squarely across the top to reduce its height by about 1/64 relative to the other teeth."

              The other method is a hinged jig for your bench's vise. It's pretty simple--bottom piece has a shaft (bolt) to hold the blade, and once the top piece closes to make a wood/blade/wood sandwich with teeth sticking out, a wingnut keeps things snug and you put the sandwich in the vice to keep it vertical while you file the teeth.

                I dreamt up an absolutely ingenious jig for sharpening table saw blades (if I do say so myself). I will post some pics of it later.

                I tried it on a very dull Diablo blade this morning and it cuts better. It doesn't cut like new or just back from sharpening, though.

                The only credit-card sized diamond plate I have is fine. I really need a medium to remove a little more material. I think if I hit each tooth with a medium and then the fine, my results may measurably improve.

                I'll post more results here this weekend.

                  I tried to sharpen my original BT3000 blade some time ago, without the benefit of this posting. My results were similar: improved, but not as good as new or after sharpening. Perhaps I was too cautious and didn't hone sufficiently. I was using a couple DMT diamond "files".

                  I have also attempted sharpening carbide router bits. I've had much better success there.

                      I'm anxious to see some of the pics and hear cgallery's results. I've dressed a dinged bit and a pretty beat blade in a pinch... once. The bet dressed up great but the blade was pretty far gone to start with so I didn't get far.

                        Okay, here are some pics. My jig is simply a dressed 2x4 that has a t-slot routed through the center. The t-slot holds my "arbor" which is: (1) A t-bolt, (2) A washer with a 5/16" center hole and an outside diameter of 5/8", (3) A 5/16 nut.

                        My jig has two additional routed slots on either end that provide tooth clearance.

                        To use the jig, I put the blade to be sharpened over the loosened "arbor." I adjust the arbor (front to back) until the first tooth is perfectly parallel with my sharpening plate (as it is held flush against the jig). Once I have it lined up, I tighten the arbor's nut.

                        I use my left hand (I'm left-handed, you can reverse this if you're right handed) to move the sharpening plate while I use my right hand to apply gentle rotational/downward pressure against the blade (think putting the top onto the world's largest peanut butter jar). The rotational pressure of the blade squeezes the sharpening plate against the jig. The jig keeps the plate perpendicular to the blade.

                        In practice, I can simply lift the blade off the arbor and inspect the tooth I'm working on. There is nothing holding it down except pressure from my hand. This works extrememly well, as I can monitor my progress quite easily and work quite quickly.

                        It does work. My blade is certainly sharper than when I started. But I'm struggling with the fine sharpening plate I have (it removes stock too slowly). I need a coarse plate. I will pickup one tomorrow.

                        So that is what I have so far. I've already spotted some room for improvement, but the current jig is very workable.

                          That's a pretty neat setup, and I see no reason why it shouldn't give some improvements to a dulling blade, or help preserve a reasonably sharp one.

                          I doubt I'd flirt with a freshly sharpened blade from Forrest or Ridge Carbide, but I can definitely see myself honing something like my poor 24T DW ripper that I force fed all those wine vat staves and hard maple to recently. I've got a set of (3) ~2" x 7" diamond hone plates from HF that I might try.

                            Right, I don't think there is really any room for improvement on the Forrest or Ridge sharpening work. I was hoping to use this to occasionally tune up blades between full-blown sharpenings.

                            BTW, you want the diamond sharpening plates to be as thin as possible. That is why I used the credit card sized plate. But of course, I'm doing a 40-tooth blade. If I was doing a ripper then I suppose the diamond plate could be thicker.

                              I have those plates too. I think that they may be a bit thick for getting into the gullet but we should be able to bevel the offending edge without much difficulty. It seems that the HF plates are a little short on longevity. After using them to sharpen an old plane iron they seemed to be worse for the wear. I guess I'll hold judement until my next go-round with them.
