Campbell Hausfeld HV2011 HVLP

I wonder if there is any difference between the Campbell Hausfeld HV2011 HVLP system I purchased on Craigslist, and the one Rockler/HF sell.

I was all ready to buy the HF unit but then decided the Critter Sprayer may be a better match for many of my projects. I then saw an ad for the CH HVLP on Craigslist for $75. It was NIB. And the seller was closer than my HF store, and close to another stop anyway.

So I went and bought the CH unit. It has a metal cup and gun. The hose is black. And it has a nicely done manual. But the overall shape is pretty similar to the HF/Rockler unit.

I hope this one works at least as good as the HF unit.

In general, I'd take Campbell Hausfeld over HF-brand any time. CH is one of the country's largest manufacturers of air compressors, air tools, and spray systems.

I had a huge CH airless spray system seven or eight years ago--the kind that can spray a five-gallon drum of latex in about an hour. It was a Home Depot "formerly rented" unit, which was priced at $105 (as opposed to the same system new for upwards of $550.)

It wasn't even rebuilt, though they might have put a new tip on it. It worked great and as far as I know is still working. But if it could survive all the abuse a rental tool takes--particularly something that's somewhat arcane, and depends on a thick fluid flowing through a very small opening--that says great things.

I've also had several CH air compressors, which were fine, and assorted CH impact wrenches, drills, and scalers.

For some reason, some Wal-marts always have a few CH clearance items in a cart in the automotive department--guess it's when CH changes boxes and the old stock looks out of place.

I got a year free of Workbench magazine the June 07 issue highly recommended their HVLP. Pretty good article on them and how to thin out paint as far as I can tell anyway (haven't tried it yet).
