    Router Table Choice??

I have some gift cards to use and I want to purchase a router table. I am short on space and am looking at two different benchtop Bosch models. The 1171 has an enclosed base with a smaller laminated MDF table. The 1181 has an open base with a larger metal table. Both have the same fence and plates and are about the same price. So my dilemma is: better dust collection or larger work surface??? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A case can be made for either better dust collection or bigger work surface. Routers generate a lot of shavings, but if the pieces you work are big enough to benefit from the added support and stability of a larger work surface, then that may be the way. What I'm getting at is that you have to make the call, based on what's more comfortable for you. Have you thought about another manufacturer besides Bosch? Or perhaps, use those gift cards to buy materials to build your own table. A good plan might offer you both a bigger table and good dust extraction. And there are so many plans out there for the asking.

If you've got a TS and are short on space, an RT built into your extension wing is a terrific use of space. You can even put a DC enclosure around them.
