    marking knife blank

I'd like to hear your suggestions for where to obtain a marking knife blank. I have some ebony that I want to use for the scales, I just need to know where I can buy or scrounge a blade.

I recall discussion somewhere about scavenging a hacksaw blade, anyone tried that? Also I think Enco came up as a source for tool steel. I'm especially interested in anyone who may have made their own marking knives, please share your stories.

    Thanks!

    Rob,

There was an article and plan for a marking Knife in Wood Magazine issue 160.

Through Schlabaugh & Sons, they offered, W-1 tool steel blanks for the knife. I got two bars, but haven't made them yet.

They also referred to McMaster-Carr Supply Co. as a source for the steel.

On page 14 of the issue they give detailed instructions on how to shape the blade and harden it after shaping.

Japan Woodworker has them. I used theirs for the Shopnotes project I did about six months ago and found the steel to be excellent.

          Thanks Steve.

My local library only carries two years back issues. Would you or anyone care to share that article?

            Alternate Steel Source

I seem to remember an article using a 1" Spade Bit as the Steel for the Knife blade for a Marking Knife.

If I remember right, it was Two edged so that it could be used by either a Right or Left Handed person.

I believe the Article was in either Shop Notes, or Wood Magazine.
