New HF Slow Speed Sharpener System--First Impressions

I received the HF Sharpener System last week. [95236] Only five days after my order. A new record for HF.

I have never used or seen a Tormek up close, so I can't really compare.

At first glance the sharpener looks a little tacky. Much lighter than I expected. The plastic shell seems thin. The attachments are roughly finished.

The grinding wheel had a little wobble and needed dressing. However, it doesn't seem to have any adverse affect, in use.

That said, it seems to work fine. The slow speed and water well virtually eliminate overheating. I am not a fan of hollow grinds, I usually flat grind everything. The 8" wheel minimizes the hollow.

An old used Stanley chisel, with a rounded bevel that looked like it was done with a hand file, had a serviceable edge in minutes. It cut reasonably well right off the wheel.

The leather wheel, when oiled and covered with the abrasive paste supplied, puts a nice polish on the bevel. Freehand, I honed the edges of a couple of large Japanese pocket knives I got from GW a couple of years ago. They are REALLY sharp. Cut thick leather like butter.

The unit comes with two jigs. One for chisels and plane irons and one for knives. While crudely made, they seem sufficient for the job. They also include a gauge to set bevel angles.

The "System" promises a full range of Tormek like jigs. I don't think they are ready yet as there is no listing on the HF website. I copied the side of the box to show what they promise. I can't tell if Tormek or Grizzly jigs would work. But, the support rods look to be in the same positions and the same diameter as Tormek.

Over all, I am not disappointed. It's not pretty, but it does the job. I wasn't about to spend $400.00 for the little I do. So, its a perfect match for me.

It was $99.00 with a free $10.00 gift card, that I used to buy a new dresser. [Gift card code 326-310-984]

Thanks for the review. Been waiting for someone to give it a try. Your review is just about what I expected. I'm in the same situation that you indicated as to spending $400 for the little I do but sure would like to be able to put on a quick edge. For the money it would seem to be a good buy.
    Thanks again.

        Thanks Steve,

Very good write up!!! ... Sounds like it would be a worthwhile investment at the price they're asking.

BTW: I finally remembered which system it was that this reminded me of .... here's a link, I wonder if the attachments work

          Thom,

I love it when you call tools/toys investments.

Other than the actual case the Tiger looks almost identical. I hope HF jigs are 1/3 their price too. The HF unit comes with, what they call the small knife jig and the universal jig. That would be $47.00 at their prices.

One tip that was in the manual [poor even by HF standards] put a super magnet in the bottom of the water well. Clean it after use and your water won't get rusty as fast.

I know it's only a C-note and you shouldn't expect too much, but I don't think 8" is a big enough stone, and at 1-1/2" wide, I don't think that's wide enough. OK for chisels but not for plane irons I suspect.

              http://busybeetools.ca/cgi-bin/pictu...45&NTITEM=B412

This unit might be a better bet at $185CDN. I'd like to find a 3"-wide stone for big plane irons. The Tormek is definitely pricey.

Then there's the Delta with the flat stone:

              http://www.deltamachinery.com/index.asp?e=136&p=843

I don't know how you keep that stone true.

I've got his one from HF:

I dont' have any complaints about it at all. Its got a 180 RPM slow speed on the wet wheel.

The one you have I haven't seen in their ads. That is really cool. I like the slower speed and the lapping wheel. I just might pick one up. One can never have enough grinders.

                  Resurecting this thread...

... to get scmhogg's long-term view of this sharpener.

Steve, thanks for the note the other day, in which you pointed out that this sharpener is available for $89.

How is it holding up, one year on? Is the leather wheel a good feature (I've never stropped a blade before)? Have found any attachments for this unit at HF or on the open market?

                    JR,

I haven't used the sharpener a lot over the last year. I still have a bunch of old chisels that need new bevels. But, not enough time. I still have no complaints.

The leather wheel, is a nice extra. I use it more than the grinding wheel. As you know, I have always used a homemade strop to polish the bevel. This just makes it easier, particularly with a hollow grind.

HF is now listing more of the proposed attachments.

I bought the scissor jig, but haven't used it yet.

Thanks for the update! The finance dept. has given the grudging nod of approval on a new lathe, and the resigned sigh on the "earmarks" necessary to obtain a few extras while I'm at it. This could be a good addition to the shop.

BTW - where did you see the $89 price? It wasn't on the display last time I was in the store, and the HF site shows $99.

It was in the store flyer this week.

Why, yes it is! I had missed it.

As much time as I spend staring at this stuff, you'd think I'd notice when something I want is on sale. Sigh.

                          Thanks for the tip, Steve,

Approximately how much have you used it with no issues? I ask because I hate buying stuff from there and it breaking right away. I would also hate to spend $400 on a Tormek though.
