One reason why I like the Lee Valley caps is that for brief caulking jobs, I can roll the cap off, set it aside, and roll it back on when I'm done. I tried Saran wrap once but it was a pain to re-use. Perhaps I'm just lazy.

I just wrap the tip with duct tape, no nail or screw. If done carefully, I've had good luck even with silicone stored for several months. Water based caulks last even longer. I like to wrap several times around and then fold over the tape part and tape that down.

Wire Nuts. Actually I called liquid nails and the said that once you break the rear seal /push end ,it will dry out, even capped. They said to store in a Ziploc bag with as much air removed as possible to extend the life.

I use electrical tape. Keeps 5200, PL adhesive, and most anything else well. On cooler or cold days, I warm the tube up w/ a lamp or torch so when it cools it pulls the tape in for a better seal.

              I use a knitting needle...

the ryobi cordless caulking gun blew up an old tube out the back end so

I came up with a kitting needle to get way inside and make sure the tube

would come out the right end.
