Ok, I know this will probably be long, so I apologize in advance. I am looking for thoughts on what is causing this problem. I have a Ryobi AP1300 13" Thickness Planer and the screws backed out of the blade cover plates and jammed in between the cutter head and body of the planer- thus not allowing the cutter head to move- in December. I brought it into the shop and it was repaired for free under warranty- couldn't have been happier.
Well, after I got it back, I noticed it did not cut near as well as I remembered- uneven, snipe, etc. I took the blades out and checked around and then noticed that one of the blade cover plates had a slight bend on the edge, thus making an arc along the cover and not sitting flat against the blade. Called the repair shop and they ordered another for me. It was such a small bend I could see how they missed it when they put it back together. I got the new cover, put it together, ran a few pieces through, and it cut perfectly.
Well, I've been trying to finish up a couple of cutting boards, and I have one all together, just have to plane it down. I start to put it through and it went through about 2X fine. I take off 1/32-1/16 of an inch each pass. I figure, take less off and do more runs through to be kind to the planer. Well, on the 3rd try, I got a little kick back. I stopped it, and tried again, kept getting a kick. Nothing major, but a little jolt. So, having learned my lesson- I took a look at the blades again. This time, a thick piece of wood was wedged up under the blade, bending the blade and the cover up in the arch. It could have been that the second cover was damaged from the initial repair and it just wasn't visable- but I'm questioning why this keeps happening. I will need to order a new cover, and may get a couple extras just in case.
My question is this- can anyone think of something I could be doing wrong? I took the blades out, and made sure the plates and blades were tight and that they seemed to be lined up well with each other before this happened. I'm just confused and a little fed up. I almost thought about buying a new planer, but then I found a Metabo planer on Amazon for $400+. Upon inspection, I realized that it was the same as the Ryobi AP1300 with a Metabo sticker instead of a Ryobi. I can't really aford a new one anyway, so I just want to get this running right.
