I don't know what has become of discipline? A few simple power tools will suffice in taking on projects. No need to rush out and purchase everything available under the sun. Discipline should dictate just adding a tool here and there as the need arises. Don't over-spend on something that you just don't absolutely need till the occassion arises is my best advice.

Of course.. in time as your skill develops and your "machine needs" do increase, the "need for a little more space" becomes a small reality. But let me re-emphasize that you should employ "discipline" and keep tool purchases at a minimum and only when the need occurs to avoid un-necessary purchases and avoid the space issue! Remember.. just a few simple tools can do a small project!

We sure did show him, Rad.... These new guys need to know how to handle that urge to buy on impulse early to avoid "addiction". Just a matter of saying "NO"!

I have always managed to get it done with only the tools I felt were essential and only adding one when the need required. Of course.. after adding for 35 years it does seem to spill over a wee bit in the drive-way and back room. But... that's beside the point! The main point is to "just say NO to avoid becoming ridicously tool addicted" as so many have. What a sick affliction that is! ....... :>)

Prior to November my life was pretty fairly predictable. After learning that replacing my wood kitchen cabinets would cost so much, I figured I'd look into possibility of making my own (although the only wood tools I owned was a miter saw, couple of cordless drills, & jig saw). So, I figured I needed a table saw and somehow was directed to this forum on the topic of why the BT3000 was a superior purchase to others in its class.

Needless to say, since spending time on the forum I decided to purchase the Craftsman 21829 after Christmas. It's been down hill since then. I've become a "tool addict" (my girlfriend's diagnosis). Hitachi M12V router (I want to do raised panels and Marc used it in his Sommerfeld video), HF dust collector (before I even cut my first piece of wood and some of you all recommended it for the price), Ridgid jointer (got an exception deal on it, but it's still in the box), and just bought a Craftsman band saw this weekend. Now I'm looking at a Ridgid planer and drill press. This is getting crazy. I even got some Bessey clamps from Amazon when they were on sell because you all raved about them. Somebody please bring some sanity to this situation! I just finished my router table, and that has made it worse.

It's your entire fault. If you would discourage people from undertaking projects I wouldn't now need therapy.

I think that you probably begin to temper your tool buying when the tools occupy about 10% more space than you have.

Another sign that you might should slow down is when you begin to think of ways to make your wife believe that you have a mistress so you can explain away all those expenses and the time you spend at the hardware store.

If you buy tools that you don't need, don't plan on needing, and don't even know what they are used for, then you might have a problem.

I'm sure the list goes on, but if you are exhibiting any of these symptoms, then you probably should look into the local chapter of TA (Toolaholics anonymous -- "Hello my name is _______ and I've been a tool junkie for the last ___ years").

My girlfriend already calls the table saw "my mistress." I had to put in tires on my car today, and the dealership is near Lowes/HD/Sears. I just had to stop and walk through the tool section.

But after receiving my chastening from Sarge and witnessing his display of restraint and discipline, I believe I see the light!

All is not lost Bruce... I can build a piece of furniture pretty much blind-folded... but I ain't got a clue how to make those BIG LETTERS on a computer. BUT.. I wish I did!

My wife is already retired (47 and has been retired 5 years from the State of Georgia.. now that's lucky) and was MIS. She won't show me how to do all that stuff on the computer as she considers me highly dangerous with anything but large and sharp wood-working tools. ha.. ha...

The bad news is she's probably correct...
