Craftsman 18" drum sander on sale

Does anyone have any thoughts about the this sander? I'm not a big Craftsman fan but this is a pretty good price with 20 percent off. I have been looking at the Performax which is much more and has a lot of mixed comments about it (good and bad). It is supposed to have been reworked but that's not always a good thing either. Any comments?

Did you check the SKU of the Craftsman sander to see who actually makes it? I thought it was Delta but maybe it's Performax. If it's the Delta it could be of the older design you wrote about.

Here is the big ugly url..

I can't find the part # on the website but it's not the same as what you see on the sears website. There is a different # on the tool.

I waited over 2 years for that DS to be on sale, finally settled for Performax 10-20. Just as well, I don't have the room for that 18 incher.
I called Sears a couple of years ago asking about the grits of paper available and they gave me the manuf.'s info so I could call them. I did and sorry, I don't remember who it was, but they said they make a lot of Craftsman high end power tools, like the 12" cabinet saws.
The only down side I see is that the shipping would be around $150 which eats most of the 20% discount. If I remember correctly, at that time it wasn't available for store pickup.

yeah the shipping is a killer. Unfortunately that is about the only option I have in this area. There are no woodworking stores to look or purchase to I have to drool online and pay the price. At least the 20 percent off helps offset the shipping. I would really like to hear if anyone has or knows of someone who has one and how they like it and the problems it may have before I pull the trigger. I have to talk to the LOML first. I still have a Grizzly 8 inch jointer in the garage still to be assembled that she helped me pickup at the terminal.

Looks like it's made by Palmgren and is the same as the Grizzly G0458

Thanks guys for the info. I got a little nervous about the Craftsman and ruled it out. I actually was looking at the Grizzly too and noticed the similarity. But all the good reviews I researched made me decide on the Performax 16-32. It's hard to let go of the greenbacks but I think it will serve me best. Amazon has $99 shipping and a small rebate which got me a little closer. Now just to tell my wonderful spouse how much better our life will be.

Personally, after using my 10-20 for a year, I think you made the right decision. You'll wonder how you ever got by without a DS.
