A while back I bought new orange urethane tires for my HF bandsaw. I saw they were 1" wide which matched the width I had quickly measured the wheels on my BS to be.
A week or so ago I started noticing that my BS was vibrating a lot more than it had. After checking alignments, etc., I checked the tires and found that the tires were above the top of the wheels on the back side.
I removed one of the tires and then noticed that on both wheels at the back, the bottom of the 'track' for the tire has a slope up to the side of the track. The front wall of the track is at 90 degrees to the bottom. I measured the width of the flat of the bottom of the track at 7/8". This meant that 1/8" of the urethane tire width was riding on the slope, and eventually it had ridden up the slope.
I started checking for narrower tires and all I could find with 7/8" width were Carters. As a matter of fact, the only width they offer for 14" BS's is the 7/8" width. I found them a lot cheaper at Woodline and ordered them.
I installed them yesterday and the vibration is gone. I was concerned that at times the tires would move slightly front to back on the wheel and wasn't comfortable with that.
I called Carter and asked about that and was told that that 'sometimes happens' and it is nothing to be worried about. They suggested that the 1/8" gap that results from having a 7/8" tire on a 1" wheel be set to the back side away from the slope.
I ran the BS a lot yesterday evening and the side-to-side movement seems to have stopped, and the tires are resting against the 90 degree side of the wheel as they should.
The saw sure runs better, as usual I should have bought the more expensive Carter tires at the start and not tried to save a few bucks.
Anyone want some 1" wide urethane tires?
