We have an old house with lots of nasty old paper insulation in the attic. Rather than hire someone to remove it, I am wondering if I could use my DC to do it? Any special prep to do so?
Can one use DC to clean out attic insulation?

Seems like you'll be doing a lot of bagging, separated by short bursts of DC'ing. The first thing I'd do is roughly calculate the volume of insulation, and figure out how many bags this would be.
If I chose to continue at that point, I'd figure out how to attach the separator ring of the DC to a garbage can, with a garbage bag inside. Obviously, leave the top bag as is. Then, suck up insulation, replace the bag, and go again.
Wear a respirator -- in addition to dust, there could be mold present; or worse, hanta virus-carrying vermin poo.

Would you leave the regular filter in place on top or use something less expensive and "disposable"--ie would I still want to use the filter afterwards or would it be too nasty and full of hunta virus?
Good idea about the volume calculation... it will probably end up being smarter to pay someone.Never met a bargain I didn't like.Comment

When dealing with attics is very important to be aware that there "could" be insulation which contains ASBESTOS ...

or .... enough hose and one of these ....

and you could just haul it away when you're done
If it ain't broke.. don't fix it!!!... but you can always 'hop it up'
