    POWERMATIC 12" planer/molder

    Not familiar with this equiptment but tempted at a $200.00 price. This machine is around 12 years old and will need new rollers. Equipted with a 5hp baldor motor and runs on 220v. My shop is in the garage and does not have 220 so would have to go to some expense to use.
    My thinking is that the price is to good to pass and that the tool could be resold at a profit if I decided not to spend the money on 220. Am I crazy? Someone tell me about this machine and whether it is worth the investment.

      Powermatic Brand

      Not familiar with this machine in particular but Powermatic is considered one of the premier brands. My neighbor has a Powermatic table saw that cost more than my entire workshop.

          I don't know about that specific machine, but if the motor is in good shape it sounds like you would be safe. I think you could resel and get your money back since you can spend over $250 for new 5HP Baldor motor by itself. Of course, the Powermatic stuff has always been very good, especially before they were sold to the Jet group (around 1999 if I recall correctly.

          If you can get the model number you may be able to get some better info, particularly at OWWM.

                  Moot at this point, but keep in mind generally that at 5hp, it's probably 220v 3 phase. Installing a 220v 1 phase isn't THAT bad, but a 3 phase may not be doable in your house.

                      Plenty of 5hp/220V/1phase motors out there, so unless specifically stated, 3phase is not a given.

                      5hp at 220V is around 18amps, so you need at least 12/3 - though I'd use 10/3 romex just in case. Put a 20-20 double-pole into your main panel, run the 10/3 romex to your garage, and put the box(es) with outlet(s). Doesn't matter how many outlets you put on that circuit as long as you only going to use one at a time. Depening on length of wire run and number of 220V outlets you going to install, I estimate $60-$100 in materials.
