    Ridgid Thickness Planer Blades

I am thinking of buying a Ridgid 1300 thickness planer from HD. However, I heard that you could not get extra blades for this planer. A quick search of Web turned up no blades for sale.

Is this true? Does anyone know where to get extra blades?

    Thanks,

    Bill

I don't have this planer, but I did notice in my local HD that they did have some in stock.

I have also seen some on ebay a couple of times. Since I don't specifically look for blades for the Ridgid planer, it is likely that they turn up more often.

Perhaps calling Ridgid directly might do some good. They should be able to tell you where to get the knives.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

It doesn't look like you can order them on-line, but I've seen them at various Home Depot stores.

I bought extra knives at HD when I bought my planer. keep in mind that the knives are double sided so you get double life out of each knife. it comes with an extra set of knives, and the replacement pack of knives comes with 2 sets. that is the equivalent of 8 sets of knives.

it is an excellent planer btw

The Ridgid is my first planer, but I've got to say, it rocks. I have had 0 problems with snipe so long as I'm careful with the feeding. I just wish the scale were a little easier to read (an induction motor would be nice, also, it's by far the loudest machine I own.)

I've seen the knives at HD. They did quit carrying knives for the Ridgid jointer a couple years back, but I scored a couple of sets when they closed em out.

Keep in mind, you can always have them sharpened. You may be able to get carbide-insert knives or even a carbide spiral replacement cutterhead for it (the latter will probably cost more than the planer, but it will probably outlast both the planer and you.)

the TP1300 planer knives are non-adjustable so you can't really sharpen them. you could slightly touch them up if needed though.

So what would be the result in sharpening them up anyway?
I imagine then just the scale would be a hair off??
As long as it was an even cut.

If thats the case, im curious how accurate the scale is to begin with...

I just bought this planer at HD for 30% off with the HF coupon, not time or reason to use it yet. Just had enough time to learn this is a good machine, but not about the details as such. Any one know?

the problem isn't the scale it's the knife's edge hight above the cutterhead. usually you (or at least I am) are replacing blades because of a nick, if you sharpened the knife down past a 1/16" nick the cutting edge is going to be much too close to the cutterhead. it also messes up the relationship of the drive rollers to the cutterhead which will result in feeding problems and snipe.

another issue with sharpening is these blades are very short, there isn't much material to remove for sharpening.

                the scale is fairly accurate

well, the depth stop on mine is quite accurate, and I do use it regularly,
if you dont use that, then the only other issue is making sure they were ALL sharpened exactly the same, these knives are keyed into the head, so if one blade ended up .010" shorter then any of your other blades, you would essentially only be cutting with the taller of the two, now one could argue that .010" is not going to make that much difference, however, you would have to keep track of which knives had been sharpened how many times and guestimate how much taller or shorter each edge was then the other,

with no provision for leveling the knife, we're kinda left at the mercy of ridgid......

I installed the Wixey digital gauge on my 1300. It's much easier to read without glasses than the orignal and I don't need to consult my caliper all the time.

I got an extra set from HD and they are not very expensive either. They are double sided and the planer comes with an extra set.

Any chance we can get a pic?

I have and love the Ridgid planer also. But haven't yet had to change the blades.
