    Best Vise On The Market

In your opinion what is the best vise on the market? I want maximum capacity, possibly quick release and built in bench dog. I am not really that concerned with price (I'll catch it on sale! LOL!) I don't think I want a cabinet makers vise.

    I am looking something like these . . .

These two vises were on my short list, prior to purchasing the Groz 9" on sale at Woodcraft. You can read my comments here.

I chose against the larger of the two Jorgensens, because it was not nearly as nice as the smaller Jorgensen, while the smaller one was, well, too small. (You're probably aware that Amazon shows the picture of the larger one, even on the page for the smaller one....) I think the quick release mechanism would soon bug me, as it seems to for a lot of reviewers. Also, I was not impressed with the jaw fit.

The Anant is obviously the closest "knock-off" to the Record 52 1/2ED, which I had planned to get all along. But it's not clear to me how close a reproduction it is, in spite of how they supposedly bought the tooling from Record.

So, I went with Groz, because I could see it first hand at Woodcraft, and found the fit/finish, as well as the built-in toe-in, and quick release mechanism to be quite acceptable.

    Regards,
    Tom

I've never used either of those personally, but I've seen those models, as well as the Groz, at Woodcraft. They all seem like they'd do the job to me. Personally, I bought the HF 9" ww vise when they had them on sale for $30. I can't tell the difference- other than color- between that and the Groz.

If you are looking for best then check out these wilton vises

the screw assembly is covered to keep chips out and the guide is box construction which is super strong and rigid. the face pivots and raises up to become a full length dog.

I don't own it but I know the type of construction wilton uses.

Oh. I didn't have those on the list as I didn't understand what I was looking at. Now that you explain it I think it will go on the list. That moving face is pretty cool!

I'd like a large Emmert patternmaker's vise. I'd also like to have what one costs...

I have a couple of generic school-woodshop-didn't-need-them-any-more vises, the ones with a metal dog on the top and the pipe handle. You guys probably remember getting your hand pinched by the falling knob when the handle was upright.

They're doing the trick for me while I shop for an Emmert...

How about the Tucker Vise by Veritas, they have them at Lee Valley. Don't have one, they just sound / look like a really cool vise.

LOL. I guess I shouldn't have said price is no object. Let's keep it to $200! I don't see the value in that vise, though I personally don't do a lot of hand tool work.

Boy, just like a newbie changing the parameter from the original post!!

Sorry Jeffrey, couldn't resist. Figured you would nix that vise. Same reason I don't have it, $$$$$$$$ But it DOES look interesting. Would like to see one operate up close. Guess it's the engineer in me trying to come out again.

I think I am falling for the Wilton. QR or no QR? Thoughts?

                        Wilton?

I have a smaller version of the Wilton. It does appear to be well made and has been trouble free but I don't know if it is the best. I think you can compare one vise to another and buy by weight.
