Opinions on a Jet 6" Jointer

OK, I stopped in this little local tool repair shop that also sells some new items. On the floor is a Jet 6" jointer that has just had the price dropped on it to $399.00 This is the floor model and the last one they have. After it is gone they will not get anymore.

Opinions, likes and or dislikes would be greatly appreciated.

i havent used a JET jointer. however, if this is the Model JJ-6CSX (see link: http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?FamilyID=2051), which i believe it may be, i'd buy the thing. since you can pick it up, you will save on delivery. i checked out the same model at woodworkers source, and loved how smoothly the bed moved up and down and the adjustment of the fence. i cant remember their price, but it was more expensive. instead, i bought ridgid's only because i was able to get it for $320, but if i could get a JET for a good price, i'd take that.

    regards,

That's mine! Well, it looks like it, anyway.

I've been very happy with it. Runs smoothly and quietly (except when it's actually cutting wood -- don't put the earplugs away prematurely!). I especially like the knobs for adjusting bed height, as opposed to levers (though that could be mostly personal), and the fact that they pop right off, too.

Before you load it up, though, you should check that the beds are flat and co-planer, and that the fence is flat, too. I wouldn't hesitate to bring your own long straight-edge, and feeler gauges. Also, plug it in and run it, if you can, to ensure everything's running smoothly -- should just be a hum.

      Regards,
      Tom

I've been using that same jointer for a few years now. I have nothing but good things to say about it. If I were in the market again, I'd probably get the same one again.

I just got it from my local Woodcraft store a month ago for that price. It seems nice; came out of the box setup spot-on; cuts very nicely; smooth and not too noisy even when cutting.
I'd grab the one you found if you can.

I'd buy it. My brother has that same model and likes his a lot.

It's almost an identical design to that of the GI, Grizzly, Sunhill, Bridgewood, and the jointer portion of the Ridgid....essentially a very well proven machine. $400 is a very attractive price to me.

This won't advance the discussion any, but ... maybe two years ago, I was talking to my dad, who was visiting from Alaska, and he mentioned that he had one of these. It was a revelation of some interest to me since I'd recently bought my 6" Ridgid jointer.

                "Oh, really?" sez I.

"Yeah, I bought it about four years ago. It's still in the box."

(You'd have to know my dad to understand ...)

Anyway, if he ever unpacks it and puts it together and actually uses it, I'll let you know what he thinks of it.

                  Larry,
My mom sounds just like your dad, has plenty of clothes bought years ago still hanging in the closet with tags on them. When I say something about it she just laughs and says, wait a few years and it will be back in style.

Larry I didn't know we were related!!!

My dad bought a Craftsman tool box set. It sat in it's three boxes unopened for 5-7 years. My brothers and me took it out of the boxes 2 years ago and set it up. The closest he has got to using it was setting some stuff on it's ledge and leaning some tools & a ladder against it.

Now back to the Jet Jointer..

If it comes complete, and works I would grab it.

Look at page 11 of the Jet flyer, looks like $399 is the going price until April. I'd see if I could get a new one out of the box for that price.
