    yet another 1587/1590? price difference

Watching my pennies waiting for the woodshow, in a couple of weeks. A new jigsaw has been on my list, and I have been looking, (had the discussion a bit back and determined the Trition, made the Craftsman, with the removable handle).
Was waiting for a bargin on the 1590, and my local Lowe's has the 1587 on closeout for $115. I figured I'd wait.
Then Low and behold, I went to one of my junk stores last night, and found the 1587 for $85.

I have a machinist/hot rod friend, who uses this model, all the time, and RAVES about it. I've heard it's tricky at first to insert blades (seems to be the big difference, between the 87 and the 90), but there is that nagging feeling in the back of my mind, saying "did you REALLY get a bargin, or would you have been better off waiting till after the woodshow".

I have seen the 1590 refurb for $139, but I could wait, I just need to know if I shot myself in the foot (tried to figure a nice way of saying it)?

    Thanks

i have the 1587, from amazon at $95, and consider it one of my best buys. i can't imagine how much better the saw-change-issue can be in 1590, but i don't miss it. i have the same saw-blade in for the past 6 months, never had to change it - it cuts so straight and square.

i have cut maple / plywood of all species / oak hardwood flooring / pvc pipes / and even a couplel of steel pipes ( ) with great results; the afterglow of the 'great purchase' is yet to dim

in this particular point, the bird-in-hand should be your criterion : if the 1590 was also available at a bargain, you could have picked it; as it is, you can relax and wait for the next version, maybe 5 years hence

edit : i assume you already bought the 1587 at that ridiculously low price; if not, advise you do so pronto

Yes, I piced it up (being the only one). I just had this buyers remorse thing going (won't have time to use it, for a couple of weeks, unless I want to use it dog tired).

Between buying without using for a bit, and the upcoming show (never know what I'll find anymore), I just wanted to put my mind at ease.

      Thanks

I got a 1587 from a pawn shop for about $75. Definitely worth it. I know the 1590 has a lot of improvements, but for me that additional $50-$60 isn't worth it. I'd jump on the one you found.

After getting my 1587, I definitely have an affinity for Bosch tools.

1587 is a great jigsaw, though I had to have the blade changing mechanism fixed.

Is there going to be a Bosch rep at the WW show? Why do you think they are going to have good deals on the 1590 there? Just my opinion, but I am not sure you are going to find the 1590 on sale if there is not specifically a Bosch sales rep or booth or something.

$85 is a great price on the 1587. Yep, the 1590 is better in blade changing but as pointed out not worth the price difference.

The key to the 1587 is to READ the instructions on blade change AND follow the directions shown on the handle of the jigsaw indicating the proper way to rotate the mechanism. Note, you will only have to ever turn the handle 2-3 rotations. More than that will cause the "catch" in the mechanism to get "lost". Hope that makes sense.

Many times I think that the prices charged for many things have nothing to do with the quality of the item but more to do with what the market will bear. The 1587 is a great example of that IMO.

Prior to the introduction of the 1590 many Bosch jigsaw owners claimed that the 1587 was the best there is when it came to jigsaws and gladly forked over $150-$160 for one. Now with the 1590 out in the marketplace, the 1587 all of sudden is only an $85-$115 jigsaw? Where's the logic in that? AFAIK, the only change made to the 1587 after the introduction of the 1590 was the lowering of its price.

The 1587 is a very good jigsaw, the 1590 has some nicer features but I doubt if it saws any better than the 1587. Actually, when all is said and done I doubt if the 1590 would have given you any better service than the 1587 will with the exception of quicker blade changes.

Allow me to step in and say I'll happily buy the 1587 off you if you figure out later that the 1590 satisfies your tool lust better. I'll even buy you lunch as part of the deal. So go off to the show knowing you're covered wither way.

I have the 1587 and paid almost full price. And, I don't regret it any at all.
I needed a 'real' jigsaw at the time and it's one of the best purchases I have made. The blade changing takes getting used to, but so did brushing my teeth (and other things) left handed when I broke my right wrist a few years back!

I got the Craftsman version last year when it was on closeout for $22, the blade is not a quick change but you get used to it. You actually may be able to still find a deal on that one.

I bought the 1590 about 6 months ago to replace an old Skil that couldn't even cut straight. I paid $129($154with $25 off) with free shipping at the time.
Wow! This tool puts me in a different world. I can now cut pretty decent circles from 3" dia. and up without using a router and template to round out. Just a little sanding afterwards. I even use it with a straight edge for quick rough cuts in place of my circular saw or table saw.
I assume the 1587 is just as good, although I never owned one.

The 1587 is every bit as good at cutting as the 1590 the difference is the blade release. I have the 1587 I first used one on a regular basis on the job when I found one new for $89 I had to have it. At $85 that's a hard deal to beat. Grab it while you can!

I also have 1587 in craftsman's clothing. Great tool and I have no problems changing the bit. Let's put it simple - everybody up until now had managed to master changing bits on 1587. If making it easier is the biggest advantage of 1590 vs 1587 - it's not worth more than $10 difference. Since you already have 1587 - try changing bits few times. I bet you in 10 minutes you will feel yourself at home with it.

                          just purchased bosch 1587

Just got back from Columbus WW show and had to keep myself from buying too much but one thing I did come away with was a (reconditioned) Bosch 1587 jigsaw they were demonstrating. The rep said the 1587 was a "steal" though he would have preferred selling the equally impressive 1590. After demonstrating both saws blade changing mechanism, it was easy to decide the $70 difference in price wasn't worth getting the 1590. Cant wait to use it!!!
P.S. re-conditoned from the factory with full warranty is Ok with me!!!

                            Vote for 1587

I just returned from HD after buying the 1587 with my last Christmas gift card and a 10% off coupon from Lowes which they accepted. My old (like 17 years old) Skil jigsaw that I bought for $10 finally died. Man am I glad that thing finally died. These two tools are like night and day difference. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out the bit change procedure - no big deal. I highly, highly recommend the 1587, especially if you can get it for <$100.
