    mobile base for planer/joiner

i have put the base frame for the ridgid planer/joiner togather and now need to get a mobile caster system for it before i get the joiner/planer top put on. the machine is really heavy and i will not be able to move it around without a mobile base.

the her-cu-lift manual shows all of their other machines but there is no mention of their planer/joiner base.

does anyone have any ideas? or any other setup that you may be using or has anyone modified the her-cu-lift system to work on the planer/joiner?

      mobiole base...

I used the mobile base set -up from Woodcraft the ones that have the four corner caters two of them that swivel /lock by stepping on a pedal type.
You supply your own piece of 3/4" plywood to make the base sized as needed
and bolt it together...works good and simple to put together...about $59.00
      I think. eezlock

Just put the same machine on the Woodcraft set up as mentioned above. It works great and is alot easier to assemble that the Rockler base. It is a PITA to put together.

Also have it under the Rigid planer as well.

I got 3 of them on sale for $49 each last month.

        Good luck,

        Bob

Are you saying that you will have 2 machines on the stand? Planer on the bottom and the jointer on top?

ya, i was afraid that i may have to do the plywood base deal from woodcraft. however, my friend has one on those, he has a hard time moving it around because the bottom rubs often while wheeling it around. its the one that has metal corners, you stick in 2x2's and then a plywood base, and the swivel wheel with the pedal in from installed onto the 2x2 in on one side. i think this is the one that you are refering to, correct?

pappy: no, its one tool, its the RIDGID 6 1/8 In. Stationary Joiner/planer:

I am still thinking of how to modify a her-cu-lift for it, its going to be awkward though. i want to use a system LIKE the her-cu-lift because i like the fact that i picks it completely off the ground for easy moving and then plops it back on to the machines legs for final use. if i succeed, i will post some pictures.

thanks for the suggestions, i can still use some help.

            regards,

How about a mini torsion box for the rigid? I'm either going to buy a Rigid or Jet, not sure, but I just love saying torsion box, I think I'm going to request the casket have a torsion box with 4" castors under it

But seriously I think you could get a torsion box done with 2 sheets of MDF and set of castors and have a rock solid base

No, it is two separate machines with each on a Woodcraft mobile base.

                Sorry for the confusion.

Why not go with the Wood magazine mobile base. Just make sure the casters will handle the weight.

                    the "Tim-Will-Lift"

Have a look at a base I built for my BT3000. You'll find it in the "Finished Projects" forum. I called it the "Tim-Will-Lift" and posted it on Oct. 7/06.
You may be able to adapt it to your stand.

                      thank you everyone!

                      thanks for all the replies.

big tim: your lift system really rocks! its amazing, seeing it i immediately knew you were from canada (all the bright ideas come from up there ). i have lived all my life in toronto and mississauga, and for the last few year been down here in az. maybe when i come to visit my parents, i will drop by and see it first hand aswell. just read your post, but i think i have gotten the mod on the herculift to work!?!

I THINK I DID IT! attached below are the some pictures of the modified herculift system. the first pictures show the front view, and yes, my son actually helped me screw in the nuts and most importantly handed me the tools (he loves it!). I ended up using the brackets for the outside mount. since the frame is ony 12" wide, i ended up putting 2" x 2" x 5" tall tube sections that i bolted to the frame first and then bolted the brackets to the tubes. now the total width is at 16" out to out. i have take some other pictures from different angles to illustrate what i did. it seems to work right now, but i dont know what is going to happen when i install the bed on top. i know, its going to be a task afterwards to engage the caster, but i have a plan and wont know if it work until i get to the last stage.

                            planer???

Not trying to hijack the thread so to speak.....and a nice looking job for all that work....but I think that machine is Ridgid 6" jointer instead of a planer
isn't it or are my eyes not looking at it correctly? eezlock

well, the box says jointer/planer on it. and yes, i did spell jointer as joiner many times in this thread

i guess, if you want to join, as in a table top, then you would be planing the edges, i guess, thus jointing. however, you could plane a face of a board aswell on this machine to get rid of a curve or warp. so i would say that it is both a jointer and a planer. hopefully i made sense.
