You got me curious. I have the Craftsman (Bosch made) version of the 1617 EVSPK, which I've had for almost 2 years, but has had limited use. I ran it full throttle for 1 minute (without bit), and afterward I could barely detect any difference in temperature on the shaft, collet and bearing cover. I don't have a temperature sensor, but I would say it wasn't more than a couple degrees warmer then the housing, which wasn't even warm. I would suggest taking it to a Bosch service center and get their opinion.

I did make a point to check, and like others described, it was not even warm to the touch after use.

I wound up taking the router to a Bosch recommended tool center and the guy there checked it out. He said he did not think anything was wrong with it and that I could expect some heat build up with a machine turning 25K rpms. Pretty much what Loring said to start with. He said if I had problems with it he would take care of it for me so guess I will just go with it. Still concerns me though because of that much heat but does seem to be lessoning somewhat with use.

I do appreciate all the responses from you.

Thanks for the report. I couldn't help but think that the 25K rpm is also moving an intense blast of wind through your router, removing heat. If there is no load on the router, and it heats up significantly in just one minute's time, something doesn't seem right.

Maybe we should have compared the torque required to turn the shaft (unpowered, of course) to see if your router has higher frictional forces than ones that run cooler. To do that, we would have to devise a measurement means that various people would have on hand. Or, perhaps this is much concern about a little thing.

It would be interesting to see if, after more use, if things "loosen up" and the no-load heating is reduced.

Well, after a few more runs the bearings must have gotten seated and loosened up because the heat build up is hardly noticeable now. Must have been tight bearings because the displays in Lowes got very warm as did another NIB I tried. Guess I got something stirred up with this thread without reason but your replies were helpful. Thanks!
