    Rob Lee of Lee Valley

    For those of you who don't know you may be interested to know that Rob Lee (I believe he is the founders son and currently runs the show) is a member of the Canadianwoodworking.com forum.
    He doesn't post often but I know he reads posts because anytime a question about a LV tool comes up he responds.

      He actually reads a number of forums, or has employees doing so on his behalf, or does RSS or whatever. I've seen him at Sawmillcreek.org and other places.

      Makes sense for him to keep his finger on the pulse of his customer base.

          I saw on one the forums recently where a member was complaining that he had not yet received the newest Lee Valley catalog. Rob, who is a member of that forum, took it upon himself to personally see to it that the guy got his catalog. IIRC, the reason the fellow knew Rob handled the matter himself was that Rob's business card was enclosed with the catalog. How's that for personalized customer service?

              I've had quite a few personla chats with Rob on-line several years ago on the Knots (FWW) forum when the Veritas hand-planes were trying to niche into the Lie-Neilson market. I have 4 of those planes and was stauchly defending their quality, innovative design and reasonalble market price with some of the die-hard "it's gotta be LN or it's crap" supporters. Boys will be boys I suppose. ha.. ha...

              Rob is very personable and knows how to run a customer service oriented bussiness. His hand-planes are a value and I just purchased their 24" steel straight edge which is excellently machined. He's a class act, IMO...

                  The two times I've had to return items (once because it wouldn't fit because I measured wrong, the second because I felt the Japanese marking gauge was junk), Lee Valley sent me back a hand-written letter apologizing that the product didn't work out. The other few times I've interacted with them it's mostly been a class-act, except for when I was trying to get a replacement screw that I broke - they kept sending me the wrong thing until they figured out my broken Canadian, eh?
