I scored a Ryobi AP-12 planer without a manual. This is my first planer and I need to know how to adjust the blades, set it up, use it, maintain it, etc. I'm open to all advice or will send a stamped self addressed envelope for a copy of the a manual.

I will attempt to answer your question. I also have an AP-12 planer, and was curious about the same thing as you. I contacted Ryobi, and was told that the blades are self-aligning. Since I installed my new blades, following their advise, it seems to work OK.

Thanks, Dave. You're a finger saver....
First off. How do I make sure the head w/ blades is in paralell adjustment with the table?
Secondly, what lube/maintainance is required?
Third, how do you set the proper height to plane the first time?

If memory serves, there are slots in the blades where the screws will rest. That is supposed to be the adjustment. As far as the head being perpendicular to the bed, Uh-h-h-h-h-h, I don't know. I just go by hook and crook, whatever comes to mind. (sorry)
I always use a lightweight Turbine oil, or a non-silicone lubricating spray. Like liquid Graphite.Secondly, what lube/maintainance is required?
I just take a little off at atime until I get to where I need to be. Do not try to plane too much at a time. You will only dull your blades quicker, and put too much strain on the system. Not to mention poor planing quality.Third, how do you set the proper height to plane the first time?

Look at this site:

I have a AP-12 and used it as a guide to cleaning. An older Delta model planer has the same blades but sightly longer but they can be shortened to fit for much less than the Ryobi part, but I am not sure of the model#.Maybe someone could post that delta model #?

Delta 22-562 12-1/2" Steel Knife for 22-560 Planer (2-Pack)

I am 95% sure this is the blade , but a confirmation would be nice.
I think that Johnson's Paste wax or a Bee's candle wax is better than oil(less dust attraction) on the threads/shafts like on a TS elevation screw, using an old toothbrush to apply the wax after cleaning. I adapted a DeWalt Planer hood for DC. That made a big improvement. I also use the board tech. he shows and get little to no snipe esp. if I hold the board up some as it finishes and it is a good cheap support too.
I do not know where my manual is and except for the parts diagram it was of little help. I do not think any parts are available except the blades anyway.AndrewComment
