    Use a file to remove any burrs, emery paper to smooth the exterior. Clean with with a rag and paint thinner (remember to soak the rag in water to reduce the chances of spontaneous combustion DAMHIK). I've never sealed the pipe, I would imagine the sliding portion of the clamp would eventually wear it off.

      Use mineral spirits to clean the pipe.

      I also don't "seal" the pipe once its been cleaned. It would seem to me that if you coated the pipe, with say poly or some other material, that the movable end of the clamp could have a tendency to slip as it wouldn't be biting into the pipe but into the coating.
