I just received the G0452 6" Jointer and when I assembled it I noticed it used the old rack and pinion fence adjustment and not the newer version of the fence adjustment. I don't live close to a store so I was not able to see the irem before I bought it. Was I wrong in assuming it woiuld use the newer version?

The rack and pinion is new to Griz's 6" jointers on that machine. The older 1182 series used a mechanism more like that on the Jet, GI, Sunhill, and Brigdewood. It's typically considered to have some advantages over a design that's manually pushed along a keyway...you can make finer adjustments with it, but it does take up a bit more space. The better Delta 6" jointer and Yorkcraft use rack and pinion too.Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.

The extra space it takes up is the downside, but the mechanism itself is better IMO....I guess the debate comes in as to how often you need any kind of precision when sliding a jointer fence to and fro.....I suppose it'd be beneficial while doing a rabbet in multiple passes. Most people that have that type of fence adjuster like it alot. Those with space constraints just store it with the fence pulled forward.Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.

Yep I already have the fence pulled forward as wee speak. I was wondering if this is a good idea. The cutter guard has the torsion spring, is it a good idea to have the fence pulled forward for long lengths of time for fear of weakening the spring?I love lamp.Comment
