Anyone using the Hitachi Planer from Lowes. If so, how is it working out for you? It's on sale at my local Lowes for $269. Seems like a decent deal if it performs well. The next step up is a Dewalt for $369 and another Dewalt for $499.

I had both a 12" Hitachi & 12" DeWalt planer in the school shop that I taught at. The Hitachi was couple of years older than the DeWalt but it gave a better & smoother cut than the DeWalt. It was easier to adjust & maintain. It was used everyday by the students for over 10 yrs. surfacing Koa wood. It was still working when I retired in 03. A colleague of mine has the newer ($499) 13" DeWalt planer and he claims that it has been performing well planing curly Koa wood with no tear outs.Comment

That would be me with the Ryobi planer, note that it isn't the 1301, which is the newer model. The newer model is NOT as nice. The older model has replane features and a cutterhead lock, the newer one does not.
In general Ryobi's product line is going downhill fast, I believe this to be because they were too closely competative to Ridgid.Keith Z. Leonard
